Intrigued by their limited opening hours, took a chance on Shinobu to see if it limited hours meant an exclusive experience.

The sushi was decent, aside from the red snapper tempura and miso soup which was great, everything else was an average sushi experience. The nigiri was very different with a heavy fish to rice ratio serving very thick slices of fish. Not to my preference but if you are a sashimi person I’m sure you’d love it!

The staff was friendly and service was quick, the interior is small and still has COVID screens up which made the space feel really cramped. Other than that it’s clean and pleasant looking.

Overall a decent experience! 3.3/5

I almost don’t want to tell the public about how insanely good the sushi is here but out of respect to the owners, I must. Fresh sushi and Japanese owed which is hard to find in Toronto (mostly Korean owned). They import their Chu Toro Tuna from Japan and it is exquisite. This is a gem in Toronto, a must try.

Remember to make reservations. The restaurant is small and cozy. The fish is always super fresh! I love the seared mackerel and volcano roll. The shrimp sushi was also delicious as they deep fry the shrimp head which makes it edible.

My fave sushi place ever. I crave their sushi when I come home to Toronto. It’s always fresh, prepared with care and delicious. I usually do take out, but dining in is always a pleasant experience. It’s very small with limited seating, so make a reservation ahead of time. My faves are the mushroom tempura and the pressed salmon roll. The staff are lovely too- great service and they still remember my order when I come in for take out!

This place deserves more than 5 star. It’s very difficult to find a true Japanese restaurant and the quality is just a top notch. Words cannot explain how good this place is. You must try. There are only about 6 tables and making reservations are recommended.

We’re from Vancouver and were introduced to sushi long before it became mainstream, so our standards are high. For a Toronto spot, this restaurant is impressive — the sushi is authentic, fresh, and the service is great.

Premier experience!

Wow! The food Shinobu is able to serve out of such a small kitchen and restaurant is truly amazing. I have personally eaten at a number of really nice Japanese restaurants around the city, and Shinobu is at the top of my list.

Reservations are highly recommended as the dining room is a bit on the small side.

Sushi and entrees were next level that I cannot stop thinking about. The fried sea bass was especially delightful. There was a very nice selection of specials, which I really like.

Details down to the garnishes were cut and prepared with painstaking care. There was a piece of cucumber sliced into art.

I will return, and if you like Japanese food, you would be remiss if you don’t try Shinobu!

We visited recently to share a special occasion and really enjoyed the hospitality and food. The portions were generous and the fish was fresh. There is plenty to choose from both the hot food and raw fish menus. They also have specials that are dependent on seasonal ingredients.

Our favourite dishes over the years that have remained consistent since the restaurant has been around include the seared mackerel, miso eggplant, and the hotate dream roll.

We definitely ordered a bit too much for two people but no regrets 🙂 We made the decision to order again midway through the meal as we have a habit of wanting to try more at times!

This is definitely a great go-to regular spot if you live in the neighborhood and are craving for authentic Japanese food. If you’re not from the neighbourhood it is still worth the visit for a hospitable and delicious meal. Best to call ahead to ensure you have a spot.

Credit cards accepted.

The fish is really fresh – would recommend the sashimi sets.

The octopus karaage were also quite unique, kind of reminded me of a chicken skewer but has a bounce in the bite.
