Shawn’s BBQ opened in Culpeper thanks to the foundation that had been built with early supporters. The Warrenton location followed in 2015 and Fredericksburg in 2018. In the end, the secret to great barbecue isn’t much of a secret, Shawn said. Get the food right, and the customers will come. Except, as he learned from his mom’s catering business, serving food is also about serving a piece of yourself to others. Shawn’s Smokehouse BBQ is a family affair. Wife Magdalena—or “the real Shawn” because of all she does in the kitchen—and his five children all contribute their own flourishes to his barbecue story. Shawn’s name might be on the restaurant, but his entire family is invested in what it means to be the local spot for great barbecue.

The atmosphere was very laid-back, clean, and classic BBQ style. Features like Taco Tuesdays, and Fish Fry Fridays make you want to come back just to try especially after you have their brisket or ribs. A variety of BBQ sauces to choose from and sides that have a bit of a twist to them, like coleslaw with a hint of coconut. Don’t knock it til you tried it. It’s dang good. They do provide catering options. The seating is limited but they have two tables that do seat 6 which is nice when you have a larger group than 3/4. I do suggest that you just order your food for carryout even though you will be dining in. This way all the food is in takeout containers for your leftovers. You certainly don’t want to leave anything behind and this makes it easier on you trying to get the right sized container or lids for your food. I look forward to many more visits.

A great American grill experience! The briskets are tasty, ribs are not as expected, but the Burnt ends are phenomenal; it’s a must! They have a delicious selection of sauces. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is energetic. We enjoyed our experience there.

Wow! I was shocked and impressed! The barbecue has a delicious smoke that isn’t overpowering. The meat is pulled – not chopped – which upholds the texture. Just a half pound of pulled pork comes with a bun and slaw. Their slaw is the perfect acid/sweet/salt combination! The wings were big, juicy and flavorful. Definitely a great value. Will drive an hour just to eat here.

My family used Shawn’s Smokehouse to cater our party. Everyone loved the food. We ordered the brisket, sliders, pulled pork, pulled chicken, and macaroni and cheese. I would recommend their catering. They were on time and brought what we needed for the party.

Finally a BBQ restaurant that knows how to do it! We came to Shawn’s for lunch on a Sunday and ordered the Smokehouse Sampler Jr. There was so much food!! The brisket was my favorite. It was tender and moist. The chicken, pork, and ribs were also delicious. The meat on the ribs just fell right off. Oh! The cornbread, the cornbread! I’ve never had cornbread so delicious and moist, definitely not dry. At each table there are several bottles of different BBQ sauces. I really liked the Sweet & Sassy Sauce. Let’s talk prices. I’ve been to various BBQ restaurants, and for the amount of food we ordered at Shawn’s, I was expecting it to be $50-$60. That was not the case. I believe our platter and 2 soft drinks ran $30! Seriously, you can’t beat that! The restaurant was clean, temperature was comfy, and staff very friendly. We will definitely be back!

I went there for the first time today for lunch as I wanted to try it out. I ordered the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich with sweet BBQ sauce and a side of fries. It is one of those restaurants purchasing system that almost forces you to add a tip to the meal, so just remember that prior to making a purchase. The prices weren’t bad but ended up being about 16 dollars without a drink.
There was nothing wrong with the Chicken Sandwich, but I would have liked 2 or 3 times more sauce than what I received with it (it is served on the side). I probably could have asked for more, but the staff was busy in the back, so I ended up eating a fairly dry sandwich. The parts that were covered in sauce were 5 star.
The fries were also seasoned and cooked well and were a fairly decent quantity so you could probably share a side if you came with 1 other person.
It is a nice and clean interior. There just happened to be a fly bothering me half of my meal, but I was likely just unlucky as someone probably let it in the door.
Overall my experience was pretty good and I would eat here again, although I definately will ask for more sauce next time.

Wife and I got the sampler junior. Our favorite meats were the smoked wings (dry rub) and the ribs (dry rub). Brisket was almost as good but could of used some more burnt edges.
