RIP Basil Thai : r/Purdue – Reddit

Damn, their food was so so good. At least Thai Essence will live on. So sad to see so many restaurants I frequented in undergrad closing.

I had Gang Dang (Red Curry) and it was so gooood! I heard they had bigger quantities few years ago but right now it’s enough for just one person. The curries are authentic and people do seem to enjoy their food! The seating is set far due to the social distancing restrictions. For the taste, I think the prices are reasonable. Keep the spice level usual if you like it a little spicy.

This tiny restaurant serves up some excellent Thai food. The menu is simple, prices are all around $10 (high for lunch, but reasonable for dinner), and the place has very little seating. The interior is utilitarian and it doesn’t have much in the way of an atmosphere.

I ordered the Green Curry with Chicken at a level 5 spice level (they do 1-5). I like spicy foods, and a 5 was just right for me. Just enough to clear your nose and make you sweat, but it doesn’t cover up the flavor. This was some of the best curry I’ve had. It was packed with flavor and spices.

I also tried the Pineapple Fried Rice. This, too, was brimming with unique Thai spices and flavors, and the serving size was large (much larger than the curry).

Really delicious and spiced food!
We loved it, the amount of spices was perfect, the portions were large (at first you think this is not enough for only one, but in the middle you see that is more than enough for two). The number if pepper on the menu shows how much it is spicy and that is correct, trust on that. They have vegetarian options and I tried their tofu, it was marinated perfectly!
We tried red curry and green curry, if you like hot dishes, recommended!
I heard they want to close this restaurant and because they owner has Thai essence restaurant, there is no alternative for this branch, that is really sad because it is close to campus! Hope they open new one around campus.

Little Thai eatery in the Purdue college town. The food serve pretty fast, but the portion is kinda small. For a $14 curry and $10 soup, I expect a little bigger bowl rather than that tiny portion. Definitely not enough for a grown ups.

Being new to the area, Google quoted that it’s vegetarian friendly but it is very NOT. If you can read the fine print, their noodle dishes at least automatically come with chicken. They can also make dishes in under 4 min mark…
The owner proceeded to tell me that it was my fault I didn’t end up with a vegetarian option and they are not responsible for any misunderstandings cause they have been in business over 16 years.
They didnt care to make anything right,
I understand people complain it can be frustrating as a business, but it’s frustrating to not be able to eat any of my way overpriced noodles.
Non meat eaters please be careful, apparently all their sauces have fish oil as well.

Mandatory tip for a ‘take out’ order and this half full regular 32oz container is a ‘large’ option (+3$).

Even though the nice lady who took the order warned me that large option is only 20% different, but seriously this can’t be real.

If that’s +20% of regular portion, be aware your 12.95$ curry will be less than a pint size cup. Food was good, but there’s too many better options for the green curry in this town should have read the reviews before I ordered.

Late fresh delicious noodles provided with a smile even though we got there five minutes to closing, and fastidious attention to covid safe practices. We got our dinners and walked back to the levee to eat them and they were still very hot and delicious. Terrific business.

We went there for dinner. The food was really good. After we ate we paid and waited for one of our friends to get her take-away. We sat there and waited and the waitress came up and asked us if we could leave because someone else is waiting. Something like that never happened to me before. Unfortunately, that ruined our experience at this restaurant.

Absolutely love this place! The food is delicious and the service is super fast! It is kinda a small place, so seating may be limited depending on when you get there, but the wait is worth it! The bubble tea is also really good (if you’re craving tge more artificial flavors) but my favorite is the Honeydew Snow with Boba

The serving size is a joke. I mean come on. A tiny “bowl” of Tom Yun sung for $10? For an average of $25 per person, there are WAY MORE better choices! Nearly every restaurant can be at the value here.
