I’ve been to Allen Street Grill multiple times now when staying at Hotel State College, and every visit has been exceptional from start to finish. The service is exactly what upscale dining should be — attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm without ever feeling rushed. The ambiance is inspired and historic, a true testament to the rich history of the property and the charm that fills every corner. The drinks are equally impressive, crafted with care and balance that showcase real skill behind the bar. | The bufala mozzarella appetizer is truly life-changing — as our server suggested, grab a spoon and get a little of every component in one bite; you won’t regret it. The beef carpaccio was another standout, a perfect balance of flavor and texture, with the crispy sunchoke bringing the dish together in such a refined and memorable way. | For entrées, the ribeye was everything you want it to be — rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The lamb shank was tender and beautifully complemented by the beans and onion jam, coming together in a way that feels almost magical. And the Cornish game hen was buttery and juicy, paired with a rich gravy and velvety mashed potatoes that made it an instant favorite. | Allen Street Grill delivers on every level — ambiance, food, drinks, and service — making it one of those rare places you can’t wait to return to again and again.

Super lovely. The food was great and the other patrons at the bar when we got a glass of wine before our reservation were so nice and friendly! They even recommended us the broiled oysters (which were fantastic). It was intimate and romantic! The perfect noise level to feel like a private conversation. We sat in the windows and it was gorgeous. I got the fish and my boyfriend got the steak and both were fantastic. The apps (broiled oysters and tiger prawns) were great as well. Our server was lovely, though I feel bad I did not catch her name! The hostess and bartenders were very kind and patient too (and very helpful with wine selection). They have a fantastic and unique wine selection (perfect for wine lovers). The perfect birthday date for my boyfriend! We cannot wait to go back

We absolutely love this restaurant and recommend it to anyone looking for a celebration or just amazing dinner spot. My husband and I have been coming here for every anniversary (plus any reason to celebrate) and have never been disappointed. Wanted to leave this review and do a shoutout to Rachel who truly made our 5 year anniversary dinner 5-Star. Thank you again to everyone at this establishment – we love each visit !

Amazing experience and very accommodating. Our waiter was super courteous and gave some very helpful tips and recommendations. One of my favorite spots in State College. And thank you again for the desserts!

Overall the experience was good, just not quite great enough for 5 stars. The service was phenomenal from both our waiter and the host. Our waiter accommodated our allergies well and suggested the best menu options. The main reason I couldn’t give full stars was that the pricing just doesn’t line up with the food. For as much as we spent, I expected the food to be of higher quality and quantity. The fish was bland and had too much oil on it. The pork chop was cooked too much and was chewy. It would have also been nice to have more menu options. The dessert was good and not too heavy.

So I went there twice during my stay in State College, got the same dish. It was spectacular the first time, but the second time it was half cooked and barely edible. As a student I really liked going there, that was 10 years ago. For a fine dining restaurant, consistency is key. Even halal carts in NYC have consistency in the food they provide these days.

Meh…

I used to sing the praises of ASG as the only good restaurant in State College. After last night’s birthday/anniversary fete, I am not so sure.

Staff was great.

Cutlery literally slid off the table four times because the table had flip-up quarter-circle extensions that sloped downwards toward the floor.

Our corner, which was over the street, was so chilly that some in our party had to keep coats on for part of the meal.

I had lamb shank. It was overcooked. The canellini beans were way under cooked, and the greens were cooked to a stringy death. The whole plate arrived at room temperature. The Dubai chocolate torte was hard as a brick.

My wife also noted that her meal was not as good as our last visit.

Also still a bit frustrated by limited menu and somewhat high prices, like $71dollars for a ribeye that was at least one-quarter solid fat. Marbling is one thing…a fat slab is another.

We will try one more time this spring, but it looks like our search for a good restaurant in SC must continue.

If you can dine in only one restaurant in State College, make it the Allen Street Grill. And if you can dine in two or three, skip the others and enjoy all your dinners at Allen Street. We did so again last night with friends and could not have been more pleased. A special shoutout to Becky and Chad, whose combination of hospitality, service, warmth, and good humor added immeasurably to the evening. I don’t get to Allen Street as often as I’d like. But when I do, I’m always glad I came.

Both the food and the service were outstanding. Not only was our server friendly and accommodating, but he was also extremely knowledgeable. He knew each dish intimately, and he also was well versed for each specialty cocktail. My Old Fashioned was potent and very good with the perfect amount of bourbon. My meal was incredible. I took a chance on the carrot soup and was so glad that I did. It was smooth, tasty, and the combination of pistachios and honey made this dish most flavorful. For my main, I went with the cavatappi. The portion was huge, with a delicious veal bolognese. I was too full for dessert, but my wife had the sorbet which she fully enjoyed. The atmosphere was perfect for State College, with several Penn State sports photos and artifacts adorning the walls. Overall, a very enjoyable dining experience.

We held a baby shower in the Beaver Room and everything was perfect. Becky Burger, the general manager, was extremely helpful and accommodating from the start. She answered questions without delay and made suggestions that added that special touch to our gathering. The room was very comfortable and perfectly set for our group. Service was just right, with our drinks, salads, main course and dessert coming out exactly when we needed them. The cavatappi pasta was delicious, the Parisian Turkey Club was delicious and more than enough to eat and the Lemon Shrimp was just right. Do order the Lavender Mule, very refreshing. Our server, Rachel, was friendly, attentive and so helpful at helping us set up and getting our orders to us in a timely fashion. I would recommend The Allen Street Grill for any party or special event.
