Small town atmosphere with conversation going on. The BBQ sandwich was good, large portion. The fries were ok. The baked beans were OUTSTANDING! Flavor was great.

There’s no better BBQ in the tri-state area based on what I’ve tried. They are quick to have your order ready and it’s always so good! If they are closed you can’t go wrong with Starne’s BBQ in Paducah, Kentucky as well!

Great local place not too far from the casino. Missed BBQ in Kansas City yesterday, was glad to get it here. Very good sandwiches especially this smoked ham. Excellent service and nice and clean –

Stopped off for ethanol, had to get a picture of Superman and just couldn’t stand anymore fast food. Super fresh BBQ done right! Had a pulled pork, smoked ham and a cheeseburger. Potato salad, slaw and beans rounded out a perfect lunch.

I was happy to find a real BBQ joint in Metropolis! The atmosphere was just like a BBQ joint down south. We got the pulled pork and ate it at a picnic table overlooking the river, in the state park that is basically just across the road. Couldn’t ask for a better road trip lunch!

Great tasting option over the local fast food restaurants. Great tasting barbecue, hamburgers, pulled pork, smoked ham, fries, potato salad and more. Conveniently located just off 8th Street on your way into town. Plenty of parking and a cool old school atmosphere. Worth the visit on the way to see the Superman statue.

Only had a burger there, but it was a pretty great burger. On my definite list when I come back into town.

I have spent decades working with pork in my kitchen. I have babied and coddled it: baked, fried, simmered, and smoked it, burned through cookbook pages and my mother’s memory in a vain effort to deliver up pork that – I have just discovered – Bill’s BBQ in Metropolis, IL, turns out on a daily basis. Bill’s is locally owned (by Bill, naturally) and operated by Bill, his sister, father, and nephew As a rule, I balk at less than full service restaurants but the BBQ was so good, the restaurant so bright and cheerful, and Bill’s sister was so helpful reviewing the menu choices and keeping my tea refreshed, that placing my own order and getting my own iced tea was a small price to pay, and I have now scrapped my preference for being waited on hand and foot.
Bill’s is located on Hwy 45, a scant ten minutes from I-24. I have passed it many times on the way to Harrahs Casino, but recently got so many “you gotta go to Bill’s” that today I finally did. One friend said the pork chop sandwich was the king; a second said the BBQ chicken was the absolute best; and a third said Bill’s cooks up a mean cheeseburger. Alas, I got there too early (10:30 a.m.) for the BBQ chicken special so went with the pork BBQ sandwich. It smelled so good and I was so hungry, I forgot to take pix but I’m going back and will post one or more at that time.
Bill’s isn’t open evenings and is closed Sunday and Monday (see attached menu) but specials are: Tuesdays & Thursdays – Pork Chop sandwich; Wednesdays & Saturdays: BBQ chicken and Fridays & Saturdays: BBQ ribs. You can get BBQ pork sandwiches, BBQ ham sandwiches, cheeseburgers, hamburgers, and even breakfast sandwiches any time. Sides include the usual suspects. Bill’s is a no-nonsense kind of place – food is served in baskets and rolls of paper towels stand tall at every table – but his melt-in-your-mouth pork BBQ is so fantastic, I wouldn’t be surprised if franchise opportunities come knocking at his door. A solid five stars.
