Vienna in the summer, a city of waltzes and schnitzel, but tonight, my companion and I craved a taste of the East. A Japanese Izakaya beckoned us with its promise of sake and small plates. The aesthetic was spot on, a little slice of Tokyo in the heart of Austria.

We ordered with abandon, the usual suspects: Karaage, Takoyaki, Zaru soba. The Karaage arrived first, a golden mountain of fried chicken. One bite, and I was transported. Crispy, juicy, perfectly seasoned. The mayo dipping sauce, a creamy counterpoint to the crunchy bird. This was Karaage done right.

The rest of the meal was pleasant enough, but the Karaage stole the show. And then, the kicker. The cocktail bar next door, a dimly lit den of mixology, wouldn’t let us order food from the restaurant. A missed opportunity, a culinary tease. Ah well, such is the life of a wandering eater.

Highlight: The Karaage, a crispy, juicy revelation.

Expected More: The chance to pair those cocktails with some damn good food.

So, until next time, keep exploring and keep tasting.

Yours in food,
H. Griboi

Kuishimbo ist a very nice little restaurant with amazing dishes.
The menu is simple, it gives you enough choices to feel happy and the taste is really like in Japan.
We had some deep fried chicken (kaarage), seaweed (mozuku – which was absolutely amazing), natto, rice, miso soup, beer and water. There are some fish dishes as well, octopus dough balls (takoyaki), shrimp dishes, curry dishes and noodles (udon & soba), mochi, ice cream and many more to choose from.

There are many vegan and vegetarian options as well, so this is the right address if you have such preferences.

The service was impeccable, they really have a very friendly staff and the food delicious! We will definitely go back again.

perfect for a true experience of japanese cuisine (do not expect sushi, maki & co), all dishes were fresh, well seasoned, carefully prepared and delicious. very nice staff there too. only a few adjustments can still be made in terms of comfort (wardrobe, hangers, chairs). it‘s small, make a reservation!

Shared a meal with my wife and it was absolutely delicious, we had sashimi and ramen. The venue is quite small so reserving a table is very recommended especially during weekend or busy hours. The staff was very courteous and helpful, we had some questions and we don’t speak good German, but they helped us speaking English. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because the table we got was quite uncomfortable, but it was because we didn’t reserve, so we got the last available table at far corner of the restaurant. Tomorrow we’re going back with a reservation and that should say everything about the quality of this place.

I visited twice while in Vienna (once for a meal, once for tapas). I did come for the tonkatsu but they only have it for winter . Really great food, reminded me very much of Japan, and the Umeshu sour was so nice on a hot day! Great service ☺️

The food tasted quite authentic, it was Asia through and through. I was especially delighted by their tonkatsu, it really reminded me of the ones at home. Also comes with rice, soup and a salad. As for the starters, the karaage was great but I think the takoyakis could benefit with mayo on top. Overall it’s a cosy place to dine in, not too spacious so it could get a bit loud but it still has a home-y vibe to it. I will surely be back when I crave tonkatsu again

Craving for some great dons and udon soups? Yes? Then you should check out this place for sure! Very urban and hip place with great food. I like the Tako Yaki and Agedashi Tofu the most for starters. The salmon don was very tender and tasty. Their udon however is out of this world ☺️. Make reservations before going. This place is full und popular.
