40 Years ago Jim and Melissa Palermo started The Broken Egg on Siesta Key at the original Avenida Messina site it was small but a true Sarasota gem. Moved down the street to a larger store, then Jim and Mel did some fantastic school lunches at The Out of Door Academy on siesta key as well where there kids went to school. Then there was The Serving Spoon on Osprey Ave and that only flourished. The Palermo’s family was also expanding. They had Edward and then Jim got the itch again and decided to take us up to Vermont for 9 long cold years, but Jim’s family was up there so it was well worth the cold for the amazing connections that were made that are lifelong. Funny thing is the amount of people in Vermont who visit our little beach town and

I love, love, love this place, as does my whole family. It is a gourmet restaurant masquerading as a diner. They have the most creative dishes that change daily. The best part for me is the gluten free pancakes and baked goods! They are just divine. I love that it’s family run, and they are all there working. The dad is the creative chef. And the daughter, Ashley, is absolutely lovely. She is the personality of the place!

Such a great space!! Met a friend here for coffee and had incredible service. The waitress was so nice and welcoming, even when we didn’t order much. So many delicious food and bakery options too. Lots of gluten free, dairy free, vegan, soy free choices and more for any and every diet you can think of. While the ambiance isn’t anything special—more like a diner vibe, everything else is TOP NOTCH. Prices are reasonable too! I would absolutely recommend for anyone looking for a full service casual breakfast, brunch and lunch spot!

I can only speak to the two baked goods I’ve tried here. First time, it was the banana cake with maple syrup frosting. It looks amazingly delicious. Unfortunately, it was very, very dry. It crumbled to almost dust when I tried to pick it up with my fork. Incredibly disappointed. Second trip I tried something that had dates, eggs, flour with a chocolate chip and nut topping. Again, it was so dry that I could not get a forkful to stay on the fork. It just crumbled. I had an end piece whose edges were a bit burned, and it tasted like an extremely dry brownie. To be fair, some other baked goods look delicious, and I may try something else some day, but after two disappointing items at $6.42 each with tax and before take-out tip, I’m not sure I’m going to rush back for baked goods. I want to add that the woman who served me was very nice, and it’s a cute little place. Please don’t avoid it due to my review, because it has many, many great reviews about their food, but maybe skip the baked goods.

The food was good homade buttermilk biscuit and eggs are hard to get wrong. The service was horrible she was rude and put out to wait on us never refilled coffee or water. There was also an older man in the kitchen being extremely rude to the staff telling them they could find another job and talking down to the people in the kitchen its a small place and he made sure all the guest could hear. One and done for us. Good service can make bad food acceptable but nothing makes up for horrible service

Visited 12-28-25. Food was excellent as always however, waitress had a bad attitude. Was very short and rude with us. She had dark hair pulled up and wearing floral pattern shorts. If we haven’t been many times and know what service is usually like I’d write this place off. Hopefully she’s in a better mood next time.

My friend and I went to have brunch at the Oasis cafe this morning. When we walked in the door a server told us we could take a seat in one of the booths. We waited a few minutes and a lady walked by (found out later it was the owner) and she said ‘you’re supposed to wait to be seated’ and then walked away. We then saw a group of five people that were being seated nearby and the server went to them with menus and to take a drink order. She then walked to our table and asked if we wanted drinks. I told her that we had been seated by a server and she proceeded to get upset with me and said in a frustrated voice that they were short staffed. I said I get that but being in the service industry myself for over 40 years, you need to put your game face on. She then got more irritated and upset and asked if we wanted drinks. I said no and she just walked away. We left as my mouth was still hanging open with surprise. I’ve never in my 61 years had an experience like this at a restaurant. We went to First Watch, were treated like gold and had an amazing meal. My friend said afterwards that she has seen poor service at this restaurant before, not sure how they stay in business.

Such a delightful breakfast spot! Super laid back and absolutely delicious. I had the Bear Creek Sampler and substituted for chicken apple sausage. It was fabulous. The coffee was delicious too. Great menu choices. And the bathroom was immaculate! Always a good sign. On our way out, we bought half a carrot cake and two loaves of just out of the oven banana bread. Both wonderful. I wanted to try everyone of their cookies ha! I highly recommend this cafe and can’t wait to return.
