Fun place to visit! Hands down the best sushi I’ve had in Pittsburgh—absolutely astonishing. I honestly didn’t expect this level of freshness. The owner mentioned they source their fish from the Maryland area, and you can really taste the quality.

Andy is hilarious and gives very generous portions. I’ve already been there twice and can’t wait to go back again—especially for Andy’s special sushi rolls.

Theres a dining area in the fish market

I love Andy’s. He’s been talking about retiring for years, but when I walk threw those swinging Wholey’s doors and see him, my heart smiles. The sushi is so good and fresh and he can make these rolls in 65 seconds, while holding a full conversation. I just love coming here. Prices are fair and the experience is worth whatever he wants to charge.

What an absolute treat to be able to visit such a well-loved establishment. Andy has a little stand inside of Wholey’s, then you can eat in the dining room upstairs. I got the special mango roll, and WOW. It was incredible. The quality of fish, the craftsmanship, the love put into it, everything is just so special. I would highly recommend coming by and meeting Andy, you won’t regret it.

Had the good fortune to order a few sushi dishes from Andy. Although he had just gotten to his booth, he was in good humor and energetic. He set to work without complaint and was impressive to watch. He was a great showman with astonishing knife skills. The price for the volume and quality of sushi is hard to beat. Highly recommended.

CASH only!
Sushi was tasty. I’m not sushi expert but tried many places and this is one of the bests if you don’t mind its super casual settings. It’s inside the seafood store so I would not recommend if someone is sensitive to fish smell, etc.
There is a dining room upstairs to take the food there and eat 🙂

I have traveled all around and have tried the top sushi places. Andy’s is one, if not, the best sushi I have tried. If there were more stars to give I would. Andy is a delight to talk with and the sushi is the most fresh and amazing experience. This is located in a fish market and there is no restaurant. When we ordered Andy wanted to talk with us and made us exactly what we wanted. We brought the order upstairs to random cafeteria tables with butcher paper easy clean up. Despite this not having some high end restaurant atmosphere, the quality of the sushi made up for it alone. Andy came and talked with us for a minute and is just a great guy. I am going back for dates with my girlfriend, when friends come in from out of town and just when I want the most high quality fantastic sushi! Thank you Andy!

UPDATE March 2024 (over a year since last post)

A truly good source of takeaway sashimi/sushi.

TO BE CLEAR, this is not traditional sushi/sashimi, but a typical American/Western interpretation of the great Japanese cuisine.

REMARKABLY HOWEVER, Andy seems to have assimilated SOME features of traditional ways of preparing raw fish for ready enjoyment .

1. Fish slices, especially the sashimi, are the standard thicker cut , unlike the very thin slice or chopped one so commonly practiced in America.

2. The rice is perfectly cooked real Japonica variety , not the American long grain so commonly used elsewhere.

3. Nigiri sushi and Traditional Maki (Nori-wrapped rolls) are up to standard as well. .

Then there’s the American rolls, fish on the outside of rice rolls.
— I’m not a fan of these things because they are generally drowned in sauce, which destroys the flavor/texture of fresh fish.
— BUT Andy seems to be judicious when adding sauce.
— NOTABLE American roll: Rainbow Roll, which does not come with sauce .

Shortcomings:
1. Rolls with cheese: These are unacceptable adulterations so common in America. Cheese is NEVER an ingredient in real sushi on in Japanese cooking.

2. Rolls made purely from vegs CANNOT be called sushi. Sushi always has fish as the star.

3. Use of styrofoam box should be discontinued. They have phthalates and are earth-unfriendly.

Original review:

Sashimi/Sushi street food style. It’s overall a good sashimi/sushi stand, located inside a fish market. It’s popular to locals and visitors alike.

I recommend the sashimi! It’s superb.

For sushi, the classic sushi, like tuna, mackerel etc are prepared well. BUT these so-called rolls (here or elsewhere) is NOT Japanese. Sushi is is about “clean” and “simple” fresh raw fish cuts. Sauces, some tomato, mustard, chili based, are a corruption of North America.

Andy himself is amiable.

My suggestion: Replace those horrid styrofoam boxes (not earth-friendly and they contain phthalate) with FDA-approved reusable food containers!

Had a great experience eating here. Andy was very conversational while he made our order. We have the rainbow roll, with four kinds of fish, and our youngest child even ate some, which really surprised us. Fortunately Wholey’s has seating you can use to set. we and Andy both agree that we wish she was located farther from the door, especially since it was so cold that day. Highly recommends trying it, especially if you are a fan of good sushi.
