We had an amazing experience! The atmosphere was perfect. Our waiter Mario was knowledgeable and patient. He made great suggestions and was very attentive. I had the “Six Finger Jack” cocktail and it was one of the best rum cocktails I’ve ever had. It was the perfect blend of sweetness and subtlety.
Then there’s the food. It was unbelievable! It was the kind of food that you want to eat slowly and savor. The dessert too! The “Wagyu Tallow Chocolate Chip Cookies” had to have been the best I ever had in my entire life! Oh! And that’s served with milk which I swear was induced with vanilla bean. We also had the espresso martini gelato and that was outstanding.
Overall, if I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would. We will be back. 🙂

One of my favorite steakhouses in the city! The vibe is dark and moody, but the servers and bartenders are so warm and inviting! The filet is my go-to and absolutely do not skip the whipped potatoes they’re the best thing on the menu!! We celebrated my birthday here and the desserts were absolutely delicious. Compliments to the chef & pastry chef!

I had an exceptional meal here. Octopus, tartare, ribeye, rigatoni, brussel sprouts, and mushrooms were all very very good. The steak was unbelievable and so tender, really felt like it was melting in my mouth. Chris and the team here do a great job. Can’t wait to do it again!

While we’ve been to this restaurant a few times, I believe our server, Caesar, made it the most memorable this time around! Visiting during their Restaurant Week, Caesar genuinely catered to our preferences, recommending wine pairings from their renowned wine list, and even treated us to a dessert off-menu specially prepared for by Chef in part of our birthday celebration. We’re grateful for the team at Butcher & the Bear for welcoming us to their family, and a huge thanks to Caesar for his hospitality—love y’all!

Butcher & the Bear is an absolute gem. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels welcoming, cozy, and thoughtfully designed. It strikes the perfect balance between elevated and comfortable.

The food is outstanding. Every dish is beautifully presented and full of flavor, clearly made with care and high quality ingredients. You can tell a lot of intention goes into the menu, and it truly shows. The cocktails are just as impressive and are creative, well balanced, and memorable.

What really sets this place apart is the service. The staff is knowledgeable, attentive, and warm without ever feeling overbearing. They make you feel genuinely taken care of and excited to be there.

Whether you are going for a date night or a relaxed dinner with friends, Butcher and the Bear delivers on every level. Easily one of my favorite spots in Chicago and I will absolutely be back.

All I can say is — WOW! From the moment we walked through the door, we had an absolutely phenomenal experience. It was our first time dining here and we were celebrating my husband’s birthday. He was warmly greeted with birthday wishes right away, setting the perfect tone for the evening.

The service was outstanding — attentive, gracious, and genuinely kind. Everyone who approached our table exuded warmth. Our server, Mario, was fantastic — sharp, friendly and full of great recommendations (and yes, definitely a “smart guy” inside joke!).

The wagyu tasting board was a true standout; brilliantly crafted and literally melted in our mouths. Honestly, it surpassed any other steakhouse experience we’ve had in Chicago.

To top it off, we were treated to a beautiful birthday dessert sampler. Every dessert was executed perfectly, but the carrot cake stole my heart.

All in all, it was a birthday to remember — my husband loved every minute of it. Thank you for making it so special!

I’ve been wanting to try this place. Given the pictures and the menu prices, I was expecting this to be a very nice restaurant with quality foods and services, that explained the price. I also don’t go out often for a $70 steak so this was a real treat going out here. Given the prices of the menu items, the service was lacking. We sat down and waited awhile to even get water – then for the actual waitress to come take our drink order, probably took 15 minutes. That is not the service I expect at a place this nice. I also ordered the filet medium. The outer edges of the steak were well done, and very dry. It also had overpowering burnt edges that ruined the flavor. There were parts of it in the middle that were a true medium, but a place this I expect it to be medium throughout. My partner’s steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, which he asked for so I’m not sure why mine got butchered. It was disappointing to spend that much money on something I’ve been looking forward to and was a treat.

I’d like to acknowledge the pros: the medium rare filet was perfect, whipped potatoes were excellent, and we got 2 glasses of wine – cab and Pinot. Both very good. Ambiance was also great. In my opinion though, the pros do not outweigh the cons.

The Butcher & The Bear!

The steaks were excellent, and the Wagyu tasting board was an absolute standout — rich, tender, and full of flavor. But the real surprise? Wagyu fat + butter chocolate chip cookies served with vanilla ice cream and milk. Hands down one of the most simple, creative + delicious desserts I’ve ever had.
