I really wanted to love Max’s Deli. The food is genuinely good, and the gentleman at the counter (who I believe is the owner) is always kind and welcoming. That’s why I decided to give this location a second chance after a less-than-pleasant first visit.
Unfortunately, the management team leaves much to be desired. During my visit, a young woman came in to inquire about an application. The general manager and assistant manager barely acknowledged her and gave her minimal attention. The girl was young, and clearly did not have w much experience, and to be quite frank they didnt leave a warm welcoming environment for her to want to talk to them. As she left we locked eyes and she raised her eyes, she clearly knew this wasnt the place to work.
What happened after she left was truly disappointing—they openly spoke poorly about her right there in the dining area, even acknowledging they probably shouldn’t talk about it in front of customers, but then continued anyway. They made fun of her and stated they would never hire her.
I was actually doing some work in their lobby and had to pack up and leave because I could no longer listen to their unprofessional conversation. It was that uncomfortable.
Additionally, they were rushing so much during my order that they made my salad wrong. I didn’t complain at the time because everyone makes mistakes, and I figured it wasn’t worth mentioning. However, after witnessing how poorly they treated that applicant, it deserves to be documented as part of the bigger picture.
This wasn’t an isolated incident either. The manager was fairly rude during my first visit as well, which is why I came back hoping for a different experience.
While I appreciate good food and the owner’s hospitality, I can’t support a business where management treats job applicants so disrespectfully in public. If this is how they behave in front of customers, I can only imagine how they treat their team behind the scenes. I won’t be returning.

I came here highly recommend by a good friend, and so glad I found this place thanks to our friends! Wow I got the rueben, my boyfriend got the pastrami, omg thats how you make a killer sandwich both were amazing! Whish I found this place sooner! Everything tastes home made and killer flavor! Big chunks of pastrami, sooooooo good!!!

I have been going to Max’s Deli for over a year and gotta tell you they got this sandwich business down! Phenomenal flavors, warm, friendly customer service from Max and his team, and quality food, from the sandwiches to the chili and potato salad. My go-to has always been the Brisket Banh Mi, sometimes with bacon, but they’re all pretty amazing. Unfortunately open only during lunch hour from 10-2 and weekdays only, otherwise I’d be stopping by on weekends after trail runs. If you’re in the Auburn area during lunch on a weekday, you won’t want to miss a stop here!

Nice atmosphere, better than I had predicted from outside. The menu had a large selection of sandwiches and I chose the Brisket Bánh Mi. It was delicious enough to discuss again the next day and plan my next visit to Max’s. An overwhelming choice of chips that come with your sandwich. I’ll be back!!!!

It’s a funky little deli that’s kind of hard to find. The food is absolutely outstanding though. I highly recommend the California Ruben sandwich! (I like to double the meat)

Was made very uncomfortable.
We ended up not being able to eat our sandwiches thinking what they might have done to them after being berated for my hat that displays an anti-racism message. The snickering and laughing heard when our food was being prepared.
We used to love it here and order sandwiches for the whole office but can’t imagine justifying that. Two stars because at least the cashier was apologetic for the sandwich-maker’s behavior.
And they forgot my cookie!!
Careful not to speak out against racism at this establishment.

Simple but nicely assembled.
Mushroom Bisque, delicious, creamy, variety of mushrooms, thick..Good.
Service is prompt and polite. Busy place at lunchtime. Located near the Dr office area in Auburn.
