Wonderfully crafted place with amazing staff service and delicious food
We tried MOTTO SUSHI on a Valentine’s Day and we were delighted! The place is much bigger than the website suggests, I was surprised there were still some empty tables.
Sushi is delicious. From my selection, the best ones were the flame grilled nigiri – absolute masterpieces. However everything tasted really good!
Staff service was absolutely top notch! There was always a waitress available at a moment’s notice, anything extra we ordered was delivered shortly after.
Overall – I’m very happy MOTTO SUSHI was so accommodating to squeeze our reservation on a Valentine’s Day with less than 2 weeks of notice. It’s a delightful sushi place which we hope to visit every time we’re in York.

It’s a wonderful place, worth a visit. The ladies who work there are very smiling and kind, they have very nice traditional clothes that make the climate better. The food was very tasty. The decor of the place is wonderful!! We were enchanted! Wow! I wholeheartedly recommend these restaurants, it is necessary to look there

So I’m a little mixed with this restaurant because I think we came at the worst time. It was my Birthday and not long been back from working in Japan, still had withdrawals from not being there so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it out! Really excited after seeing the photos.
On arrival, we were seated on the ground floor, nice ceiling with the parasols but it felt a little dead and spacious. The space felt very “you are just here for the food” or cafe vibe. The music felt off for the atmospgere it was trying to give and the lady seemed like she had enough and wanted to go home already. Our booking was for 7.30pm so understandably she was probably exhausted from the week. She was also on her own hence why the upstairs (the most photographed area) was unavailable. It’s a massive shame because I wish that the ground floor was the same vibe. Was really hoping to be in a tatami booth too.
Anyway. The food and drink.
I like trying different things and saw that they had a matcha milk drink with japanese rice dough on top. Ordered that and laughed because it came out in a pint glass the rice dough was very melted, possibly old, or defrosted or if made, too much water?
The seafood yaki soba was very beige and not exciting, katsu curry wasnt as nice as japan. Wasnt expecting the gyoza to be fried! Tasted ok.
Obviously its really hard to judge it especially as we had japanese food in japan previously but was sort of hoping it would’ve brought back good memories .
The inari and lobster gunkan were nice though that inari was mega stuffed with rice.
Biggest note, even though they were smaller than what you would get in Japan, the Takoyaki was DELICIOUS!!!! seriously it tasted better than what we had in Osaka.
I will say their portion sizes can be generous based on what we had. But I left feeling like they really didnt want us there (though they did smile and say goodbye on our way out). We left at about 8.30pm
The toilet door wasnt great, especially being disabled access and was a struggle to close it.
I don’t want to give up hope on this place so will probably come back again but would rather get seating upstairs and on a busier day if i want an actual restaurant vibe.
I think at the moment it might still be suffering from being new (there might possibly be too much on the menu? ) and there’s always bumps in the road at this time. I hope this is a fair review, will likely update over time.

Great veggie options. The service from the get go was fantastic. Very friendly, attentive staff. Food was super tasty and fresh.
The iced lemon tea was amazing as I cant find anywhere in the UK that does it this good and sweet.
The avocado maki was super fresh. Inari tofu is my favourite im always happy to find it on a menu it tasted great. My one year old had vegetable yaki udon noodles and loooved it, they tasted good and flavourful. Pumpkin koroke is another favourite that I love to try and this was probably the best ive had. Partner had a veggie bento box which was plentiful and tasty.
Staff were amazing, super helpful and great to talk to. Real family friendly atmosphere, you feel extremely welcomed in, its very homely.
Price is amazing, cant argue with it at all. We also ordered food to take home.

We had an amazing experience at Motto Sushi Bar in York. The atmosphere was warm, calm, and welcoming, kind of place where you instantly feel relaxed. The staff were genuinely friendly, attentive, and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived.
The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, beautifully presented, and full of rich flavors. Portions were generous and surprisingly filling. We couldn’t even finish everything, and the staff kindly offered to pack the rest for us to take away which we happily did. If I’m ever back in York, there’s no doubt I’ll be heading straight to Motto again. It’s not just a great meal, it’s a place you want to return to.

Amazing place to eat!! The sushi is simple the best, really fresh and high-quality ingredients, very tasty and the presentation is incredibly beautiful
The staff and their service it’s great and friendly. For our second time at the restaurant they remembered us (which it was a good surprise!) and we think that makes a huge difference with other restaurants – amazing food and amazing staff honestly deserve a 5 stars review!

Delicious sushi! We (I took my partner on a date here) ordered several different sushi sets. They got one order item wrong, but generously let us eat it while they prepared the right one free of charge! So lovely all round, great food, friendly service, the sake was the nicest that alcohol has ever tasted, and the desserts were a treat for the eyes as well as the mouth!
