First visit here but certainly not our last! After visiting TAKATO in Ft Lauderdale we knew this would be a must try. Food was phenomenal and service was top shelf. Thank you to the culinary experts for the wonderful meal and to Flavie for the attentive service. We ordered the Angry Chicken, Short Rib Tacos, Crunchy Shrimp, Shrimp Tempura Maki, King Salmon, Tuna, and the Steak. All 10/10, no notes.

Thank you to Flavie, our wonderful server who made our first night at the resort an amazing experience!

This is my and my family’s first trip to Gatineau, and the Kato restaurant was certainly worth our 4-5 hour drive!

Our Order: Brussel Sprouts, Angry Chicken, Flaming Scallops, Kato Special Maki Sushi, and Wagyu Sliders. For drinks, we had the Bonsai Mocktail. For dessert, we had the Pannacota and the Tempura Cheesecake with Matcha Ice Cream.

Flavie offered to make the two sliders into three so our table could share! It was a very thoughtful offer that we took, and every bite was delicious! My personal favourite were the Brussel Sprouts. The vinaigrette and char made an amazing combination that I was blown away by. Another highlight of our night were the literally flaming Scallops that made lovely pictures for us to take back. We eat sushi a ton back home, but the Kato Special Maki was definitely a unique Maki with an outer shell I have never tried before and tasted scrumptious.

Overall, this has been a beautiful start to our stay at Cartier Hotel and Spa Resort~

Every food item ( shrimp sushi, angry chicken, tofu soup) like heaven, especially the oyesters and not to forget the Caribbean mocktail too. It was my first time at Japanese cuisine, and it was amazing experience.

Very yummy food and friendly service. Awesome location as you can walk up from the spa in your bathrobe to have lunch. I recommend it as a treat within a treat day.
They gladly accommodated gluten-free and even changed the tamari.

Guillaume was exceptional. I know it sounds minor, but the moment our water was empty, he replaced it almost instantly. He was attentive without being intrusive, handled our modifications with ease, and checked in at the right moments to make sure everything was perfect. The food was very good, but honestly, the service was the highlight of the experience.

It wasn’t busy at all, which surprised me. Especially considering Koena is always packed. This place deserves way more attention. It’s seriously underrated.

I’ll start with the bad and end with the good. We were there the evening of Sat Dec 13. The worst part of our experience was the retaurant manager Mayhem. At the end of the evening which was a 60th birthday celebration for my sister, we were cleaning up the decorations and he came over to us and said “you better clean every last bit of decorations or we will charge you a celeaning fee.,” There was no need for it. We had already started cleaning. There were some large pieces of confeti, the size of a quarter, which could have easily been picked up with a vaccum at the end of the night (there were hardly any customers left and we were in a completely separate part of the restaurant..in other words no one else was going to be eating there that night). It would have maybe taken 5 mins to vaccum it up. Instead he once again rudely insisted we clean it up or we would be charged. When one of the staff brought out a push sweeper to help us clean it up he got upset with her and she was the only one trying to be helpful. So we were literally on our hands and knees picking up the large confetti. I have video of it. It was a terrible experience.

This manager needs to be fired or have a serious talking to and extensive client service training. There were so many ways he could have dealt with that situation but he chose to be agressive and disrespectful.

The food was also not good. I ordered shrimp fried rice and they brought me the veggie fried rice (not a big deal). They took it away and brought back the right dish, but the shrimp was cold, translucent and slimy. Every single person in our group of approx 20 who ordered steak flank said it was cold. The menu is VERY limited. I thought it was because we were a large group and perhaps it was a set menu but it was their actual menu…so you had better like sushi.

On our way out the bartender (the old guy guy..not the young one) asked how our experience was and when we told him he was equally rude. He seemed to take it personnly and started attacking us in his broken English saying that we should just get out if we didn’t like it. I felt like I was being punked, I couldn’t believe it.

I strongly recommend that if you’re planning a group outing you do not plan it here. It was awful and I will never go back. I’m also writing the hotel to tell about our experience because some of us had rooms there.

The only good I can say about our experience is the the waitress and the girl who was helping her (the same girl who brought the push sweeper and got scolded for it) were both very good and worked really hard. Their efforts were greatly appreciated!

Upd: While I understand it was a Saturday, the place wasn’t THAT busy. Two glasses of champagne don’t take 18 minutes to pour, the bar was nearly empty. Maybe that’s the time it was entered in the system, but definitely not when we ordered.

***

30 minutes for 2 glasses of champagne, 1.5 hours for rainbow sushi and not a single update or apology the whole time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully done, but the service? Awful. It wasn’t even that busy, so there’s really no excuse.

This restaurant has to be one of the best in Canada. The staff were so attentive and professional, even the staff clearing other tables ask if we needed anything. Service was excellent, our young lady explained all the dishes and made sure I didn’t get spicy food. And now the food, prepared by professional chefs and excellent quality ingredients. Have to give 5 star on all areas. The manager also checked in with us a few times and we expressed our great experiences.

Nice discovery . Try anything on the menu . It’s all quite good . Fun place in a great hotel with a spa connected to it .we ate the wagyu dumplings , seasoned ademanes, shrimp tempura , bavette with Asian seasonings (to die for) and miso . Sitting outside , you have a view of the outdoor spa . Great place to spend a zen weekend taking care of yourself
