Reviews
My husband and I recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Greek Tavern, and we were thoroughly impressed! From the appetizers to the main courses, everything was served in generous portions and the quality was truly amazing.
️ The Food Highlights
To start, the Shrimp Bisque was rich, creamy, and flavorful—a perfect appetizer to whet our appetites.
For the main courses, we indulged in the following:
• My Dish (3-Course Skewers): I ordered the platter featuring lamb, beef, pork, and grilled chicken. Every piece of meat was incredibly tender and perfectly seasoned, a testament to their grilling expertise. The lemon potatoes served alongside were crispy on the outside and wonderfully moist and tangy on the inside.
• Husband’s Dish (Chicken Skewers): My husband’s Chicken Skewers were equally succulent. Paired with the flavorful lemon rice and a fresh, crisp Greek Salad, it made for a well-rounded and delightful meal.
Both of our main dishes were accompanied by warm, fluffy pita bread and the traditional Greek sauce (tzatziki), which was clearly homemade and refreshingly cool.
✨ Overall Impression
If you are looking for authentic Greek cuisine with huge, satisfying portions and top-notch ingredient quality, Greek Tavern is the place to go. You definitely get great value for your money oh and the Baklava is a must ! Our waiter was extremely friendly, friendly and courteous
First off, let’s talk tzatziki. This creamy yogurt, dill and cucumber dip is high on my list of favorite condiments! You can put it on everything from the fresh pita to potatoes and meats- and trust me you’ll want to!
For appetizers, we’ve loved the Greek meatballs and the baked honey feta is amazing – the tartness and sweetness go together so well and who doesn’t love puff pastry? I have to ask though, stuffed grape leaves? I absolutely love them, and I’m so sad that they are not on this menu! Everything is so good – I’m sure they would be amazing.
For the most bang for your buck, get the three skewer platter. It’s a huge portion of meats including steak, chicken and pork plus a hefty pile of gyro meat. You also get warm soft pita bread, some lemon butter potatoes and a salad! Honestly, if you get the platter and an appetizer it’s enough to feed two people, or, for one, you’ll have delicious leftovers for lunch the next day!
The moussaka was awesome – the meat is well seasoned and the béchamel sauce is creamy perfection. I also had the lamb and orzo. The orzo in a tomato sauce is perfectly cooked, tender and delicious and the lamb shank was so good I wanted to pick it up and eat it with my fingers! (Honestly, I took it home as a leftover and did just that! )
Something I love about Greek food is the inclusion of cinnamon in savory dishes and they use just the right amount of all sorts of spices to infuse their meals with delicious flavor.
Again, the staff have always been so welcoming and accommodating. I ordered a hazelnut matcha after my dinner last time and, when I wanted it a little sweeter the barista was so kind to just add an extra pump of syrup to make it exactly what I was looking for.
I think this is a perfect date night location, or a great place for a celebratory meal. If you bring your children they won’t be uncomfortable here, but there’s plenty of room for family tables as well as more intimate dining experiences.
• The only concern is parking. We went at noon on Friday and had to park 2 blocks away. The quality of the experience made the 100 yd walk worth it, but still.
Now, the Greek Tavern is just a few yards from Main Street and is housed in a gorgeous building. The place was spotless and decorated like you were dining at a seaside Mediterranean restaurant. I loved the open ceilings and the use of brick inside. I even appreciated the design in their restrooms. Someone really put a lot of effort into designing and decorating this restaurant. It has two sun porches, a huge dining area, and an elegant coffee spot that could steal the Starbucks crowd—so impressive!
We visited on a Friday during lunch, and the crowd was just right. It was a mix of people from all over the world, and the owner was very friendly and recommended some dishes. The employees were dressed in coordinated outfits, with gray for the servers and black for the hostesses. I must say, the owner hired some of the prettiest young ladies you’ll ever see in one restaurant. They were all nice and hardworking.
The star of the show was the menu—good grief! It was the size of a window pane, no kidding. It had almost every Mediterranean dish you could imagine ordering. We started with hummus and pita bread. It was good, but it didn’t quite have that traditional olive flavor mixed in with olive oil. However, as of today, four days later, I’m still enjoying it with my own chips. They give you a lot. We ordered Greek salads and gyro wraps with blackened chicken—amazing flavors. But I added the grill octopus! Now, let me say, this is Gainesville, Ga, and it was the best I’ve ever had—crispy, juicy, and amazingly similar to Spiny Lobster (check out the pictures!). We also had coffee and espresso to finish off the lunch. Let me say, Greeks like their coffee strong, so be warned.
I’d definitely suggest checking out this fantastic restaurant downtown Gainesville, even with a current 85 health inspection! Just a heads-up, it’s not Panera, so you might have to wait a bit, and the bill for two, including a tip, will be around $50-75. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the parking. The main lot has maybe 20 spots, and they’ve added a map for other areas, but most folks might be hesitant because of Atlanta’s parking fees. If you decide to go, ask for “Day”—she’s a sweetheart who’s planning to become a teacher after high school.
