Reviews
I’ve been to the Harlem location, so happy the food is equally great in Yonkers. The juice bar was a pleasant surprise, they gave some nice samples and I don’t even like juice bars usually, so there’s some healthy options opposed to the fried goodness.
We loved all our food, I got catfish, shrimp, Mac n cheese, collard greens and fries.
Tips:
– They don’t serve chicken on Friday’s
– They just opened so phone and online ordering isn’t setup yet but coming soon.
Starting with the positives: the establishment is new, very clean, and the wait time was minimal. We ordered for four people and had our food in about 10 minutes, which was great. Packaging was fine for takeaway as well.
However, there were some issues. The ordering process felt a bit disorganized and our order was messed up. I actually overheard another customer mention their order was incorrect, but I assumed it was a one off and didn’t double check mine before leaving. I would definitely recommend checking your order before you walk out. There also doesn’t appear to be a phone number available to call if something needs to be corrected, which makes it harder to resolve issues after you leave.
We also noticed inconsistency with portions. We ordered multiple fried shrimp meals at the same price, yet everyone received a different amount of shrimp. That shouldn’t happen when customers are paying the same price.
Food wise:
Fried shrimp 7 out of 10. Fresh, good but the batter was a bit bland.
Fried fish 5 out of 10. Mostly batter.
Mac and cheese 3 out of 10. Dry, oily, heavy on salt and black pepper, and no cheese stretch.
Candied yams 5 out of 10. A safe choice.
I understand they just opened, so I’m hoping consistency improves. I genuinely want this location to do well, but for now I’ll be sticking with the Harlem location
Okay, so here’s the good news. The seasoning and flavors were on point! Everything tasted great. Not too salty or sweet. Dare I say seasoned to perfection.
And now, the bad news. The Mac & Cheese was a bit oily, and the noodles were separated from the cheese, so the dish didn’t feel cohesive to me. No indicator of a cheese sauce or any sign that it was baked, so that wasn’t great.
The Candied Yams were edible, but didn’t have that softness or slight mushiness you get from cooking the yams in the sauce long enough. It was just a bit undercooked. Had it been cooked for a bit longer, the flavor would’ve been stronger and stuck to the yams better. Maybe a bit more brown sugar, honey or vanilla could’ve made that flavor pop.
And finally the fish. I really loved how light & airy the breading was. And while flakey, the fish was a bit too thin so the breading to fish ratio was super off. More breading than fish for sure. I would’ve rather had 3 pieces of regular fried fish filets than 6 pieces of thinly sliced fried fish filets.
Overall, there’s definitely potential for this location to be as good as the Harlem one (I’ve never been there, but existing reviews suggest that many love that location). Just gotta work on the way the food is actually prepared.
The food is the real deal. I ordered the all whiting, all catfish, and the shrimp. The seasoning is fantastic and the texture is perfectly crisp. The catfish portions are huge, and while the shrimp has a hearty seasoning and breading, the freshness and sweetness of the shrimp still shine through.
For sides, the candied yams were sweet and tender, a perfect contrast to the savory fried seafood and the mac and cheese was delicious.
The service was quick, the prices are very fair, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. It’s a great addition to the neighborhood and I’m happy to support a business that clearly takes pride in what they do.
