The Royal Wulff Tavern at the Range Rider Lodge in Silver Gate, Montana. Silver Gate was founded in 1932 and the building was built in 1937. It opened in 1938 as the Gorham Chalet. After the completion of the Beartooth Highway in 1936 the Cooke City/Silver Gate area became an Entrance to Yellowstone instead of the end of the road ghost town it had been for some time. The Chalet had a sophisticated menu in order to cater to travelers using the new road to access the Park. Ralph Nelles, who helped build the Lodge and tended the bar for the first couple of years it was open, remembered Hemingway coming into the bar with his wife Pauline every Saturday night for dinner, drinks and dancing.

Come check this place out! We were staying nearby at the end of season in October and happened to show up on their closing night. This is such a a cool place to hang out for a while. The food was good and the cocktails and cocktails were wonderful! Enjoy the fireplace where you can put a log on the fire yourself, investigate the Hemingway museum and local historical artifacts.

This was a delightful surprise. We have been to Cooke City over a dozen times. Stopping here for dinner was one of the best decisions we made. The building itself is amazing, and the Hemingway museum and artifacts are impressive. Who knew, arugula and caprese in Silver Gate? The chef was so talented and the bartender so engaging.

Stopped here on my way through yellowstone, what a hidden little gem this place it. Great food (had the chicken taiyaki bowl) and the Bartender was super friendly and poured one hell of damn good drink. The old exposed logs set a great atmosphere with the low light setting. Surprisingly had a great little Hemingway museum with some great info. 10 out 10 recommend to stop in.

On an August 2025 trip around the Yellowstone region my wife, daughter and I were fortunate to spend a fabulous evening at the Royal Wullf for dinner, drinks and great conversations with Chris Warren.

Chris makes an outstanding cocktail, you have to try the house version of the Old Fashioned! Turns out he’s also an Ernest Hemingway historian and author of a fascinating account of Papa’s time in this region. It’s a must read for any fans of Hemingway. (Ernest Hemingway in the Yellowstone High Country).

The hotel and restaurant is a delightful step back in time. Beautiful, rugged and authentically western. The fireplace is a treasure too. If there are seats at the bar, eat dinner there, watch Chris mix drinks and get to know him and the staff.

Chris, Thanks for one of the best nights of our trip!

THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE!! The owners, Andrea and Chris were our server and bartender. They are such fantastic people, I feel like I made 2 new friends! There is a fascinating Ernest Hemingway museum as he was a regular patron of the establishment while he lived in the area. Make sure you buy a copy of Chris’s book, “Ernest Hemingway In The Yellowstone High Country” and have him sign it (if he’s not too busy pouring delicious drinks). The setting is authenticly classic, the food is delicious, the drinks are top shelf, and the service is impeccable!! I live south of yellowstone and will be going here every single time I come to the area!!!

A very cool original log cabin that also works as a place to stay, eat, or grab a drink. And it was a favorite place for Ernest Hemingway to stay! I got the charcuterie board, which was perfect for after a long day of adventure. The beet salad and the chicken curry!

Take a step back in time and enjoy high-quality craft cocktails or a beer, as well as VERY good food! Today I bellied up to the bar, but they also have a gorgeous fireplace surrounded by comfy couches and bison pelts! Love this place.

What a fabulous unexpected gem in Silver Gate! We stayed in the motel behind the general store next door and were thrilled to hear there was dinner, live music and a Hemingway Museum next door at the Royal Wulff Tavern. The owners were delightful. Food was simple but delicious (Cubans and paninis) . Drink menu was extensive. Music was fabulous and all of the locals were out dancing on a Tuesday night. Highly recommend!

WOW!

I did not expect this amazing place to be in this small mountain town. Amazing craft cocktails, unreal atmosphere/vibe, and a food menu that will give you a much needed break from the burgers and fries that are found inside Yellowstone.

Loved the Caesar salad with chicken!

Stumbled upon this place on a recent trip to Yellowstone. You have to check this place out if you’re ever near Silver Gate. The food is incredible, the drinks are amazing, and the Ernest Hemingway exhibit is super intriguing! The owners are fantastic people. Chris is an owner, an incredible bartender, and just a good fella. His wife does the food and desserts, & although the food menu wasn’t extensive, it doesn’t have to be and what is on the menu is absolutely delicious. (Had the best Creme Brulee of my life here). Chris wrote a book on Hemingway and his time in the Yellowstone High Country, worth checking out if you’re there! If you’re on the northern range of Yellowstone, you should make it a point to stop at the Royal Wulff Tavern.
