A wonderful gem! Badou is super nice, the food was amazing! We’re lucky to have this place.

It does take a while to get your food, but that’s because he’s actually cooking your food, it’s not “shorts” as we say in the industry. Well worth the wait.

I was visiting a friend and she said it was a must have–she was absolutely right! I got the vegan mafe, my friend got cebbu yap, and then we split the plantains and veggie pastel. All amazing! Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in town!

An amazing adventure into African cuisine. Chef greeted us graciously and gave us a tour of Senegalese cuisine including the national dish which he prepared to perfection. Great for a culinary date night followed by other outings in the very diverse Rogers Park area.

I had the pastel, boulette, and fataya. Badou made all of these delicious “stuffed fried dough” foods very well. I also appreciated how these arrived well after delivery between their location in Rogers Park and a home 5 miles away.

Oh my Gosh. What a wonderful surprise. I went there not expecting anything fantastic to happen. Not good, not bad. Just expected to get a meal after a long, hard, day at work. Well Surpise, something fantastic did happen. The food was delicious. I have to put this on my list of places to revisit. I ordered Jerk Chicken and Jolaf Rice. The chicken was spiced just right and the rice was fresh (not that hard, bottom of the pot stuff. No this was a softer texture and was very flavorful). I’m sure they can bring spice flavors down if you don’t like spicy. But check their menu. The have lots of flavorful looking dishes.

The service is absolutely amazing. The consideration for customer experience is phenomenal, with a care to connect and cater to customer needs on a level beyond what is normally offered by other restaurants and staff. The food is delicious, I cleaned every bit of it off my plate. Would highly recommend!

I walked into Badou Senegalese Cuisine not expecting much—just a warm meal and a quiet break from the wind cutting through Howard Street. Instead, I ended up stepping into one of the most soulful dining experiences I’ve had in Chicago.

The evening began with the Fataya, small golden hand pies that arrived steaming hot. One bite and the crispy shell gave way to perfectly seasoned meat, and when dipped in the spicy house tomato sauce, it tasted like something crafted with memory, not just technique.

Then came the dish I will remember for a long time: Thiebou Djeun. It arrived like a feast—rice tinted the color of sunset, a whole tender fish laid across the top, and vegetables so soft and aromatic they almost melted under the fork. Every bite tasted like it carried history. Smoky, tomato-rich, slow-built flavor that can only come from hours of patience. It was the kind of plate you eat slowly because you don’t want the experience to end.

The Yassa Chicken followed, bright and tangy, with onions cooked down until sweet and glossy. The charred chicken was tender, but it was the lemon-onion sauce that transformed the dish—it hit every corner of the palate.

I thought I was done, but curiosity led me to the Dibi Lamb. Flame-kissed, mustard-marinated, and full of personality. Each piece was smoky with crisp edges and juicy centers, balanced by raw onions that added crunch and sweetness.

By the time I tasted the rich, velvety Mafe, I understood why this restaurant has such a loyal following. It’s not just food—it’s comfort, tradition, and pride on a plate.

When I finally stepped back outside into the cold Chicago night, I felt warmer than when I entered. Badou didn’t just serve me dinner. It gave me a story to take with me.

This place is amazing. Super welcoming and friendly owners and staff. We got the veggie balls and meat pastel to start. Wow. The fried dough of the pastel was insane.

We also got the chicken and peas, jerk and jollof and the veggie national dish. Everyone loved theirs! I can speak to the chicken and peas – it was 1000% one of those craveable dishes that will follow you around for the rest of your life. Perfect mustard and wine based sauce, tender chicken and super savory jollof rice on the side. Damn.

Highly recommend – we wanna try their whole menu!

Oh, and the hibiscus drink was amazing! Get some to go and mix with some white wine and La croix – chefs kiss!

Been eating from Badou for years and I have never been disappointed! Everything I’ve had is delicious so it’s hard to pick a favorite but I tend to order the Yassa Fish more than anything else. I was very happy to see him at Vegandale this summer. Congrats to your continued success!

Badou and Daniel are so nice. Cooked the meal fresh and kindly corrected my order when there was a misunderstanding. I’m looking forward to returning. I want to try everything on the menu that is pescatarian friendly.

I had veggie pastels, Joloff rice, and whole fish. Yummm Support this Black business!

Keep up the great work, everyone!
