After 13 years, Gallo Nero remains the best Italian restaurant in Portland. That’s simply it. None of the other “Italian” restaurants come even close.
The issue for some is that true Italian food isn’t always appreciated. Many people prefer the Americanized versions of Italian dishes because their taste buds have been skewed toward overly fat- and salt-saturated flavors.
At Gallo Nero, you’ll have the chance to taste real Italian food – prepared, served, and paired as it’s meant to be. You may discover you’re not ready for that… or you may realize you actually Love the way it’s properly done.
The ingredients are top-notch: olive oil with virtually no acidity; fresh bread and focaccia; excellent, reasonably priced wines; fresh pasta cooked truly al dente; cheeses; vegetables that taste homegrown; sausages that are likely made in-house (they must be to be that good); and perfectly cooked (not overcooked) beans.
The result was a ridiculously good, perfectly made and paired, legitimate Tuscan dinner.
Perfect from the first bite to the last sip.
Also, somehow recently they stretched out to an adjacent space. Now there is plenty of room for a nice romantic or work dinner.
An absolute must for any Italian-food lover!

This Italian restaurant, the owners and workers are absolutely amazing. The food so fresh and absolutely exquisite. Prices are great. The wine is such great quality just like the food. Dessert and espresso delicious!

This restaurant is wonderful. The food is absolutely delicious, and the server who took care of us was very kind and polite. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, not loud at all, which makes it easy to talk and enjoy your time. The people are friendly, and overall it’s a great place to relax and have a nice meal. I definitely recommend this place!

Update: Seasonal offerings are exceptional. On our second visit I loved a seasonal dish of shredded radicchio, sliced sweet locally grown tomatoes and cucumbers, local burrata, and chubby shrimp. My husband had a lamb ragu over fresh pasta. This follows our first visit when we and friends enjoyed Verza and Caprese salads, Mushroom Bruschetta, Gnocchi, Ravioli, and Baked Cod. We also shared lemon desserts and Tiramisu. The service was excellent, food beautiful, refined, and delicious. Restaurant decor is restrained and the atmosphere a low buzz. This means we could hear one another which made our dinner together particularly enjoyable. Some seating can be cool due to effective air-conditioning.

I been hawing lunch one time and dinner one time at this restaurant and the food is not to my taste, find it to salty and fat. Only thing I can recommend so far is the tiramisu. Stay away from the chocolate cake. Ravioli was ok but to much fat, think it was butter.

Legitimately one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever experienced in the US. I have lived in Italy and my husband is Italian and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our dinner.
The wine selection is varied and thoughtfully curated. We enjoyed a bottle of Sardinian Carignano which is a rare find in the states.
The prices are more than reasonable. We had a lovely locally sourced steak that melted in the mouth for $32. Bread is homemade fresh TWICE daily and the meat and cheeses were top quality.
If you’re looking for AUTHENTIC Italian in Portland, look no further. Nero Gallo has it all; great food, prices, staff, atmosphere and we will most definitely be back.

Went to Gallo Nero for Christmas Eve dinner. It was pretty busy that night. We’re glad we made reservations. The menu has many traditional Italian dishes served in a modern style. I enjoyed the pasta sampler. We also had the lasagna and pasta pomadero. Tiramisu was very good and the pear gelato was excellent. It has some alcohol, so must be over 21. Service was friendly and efficient. The only criticism was the cost for glass of wine. Very highly marked up, which server really pushed the sale.
