I LOVED it here! It’s very casual, you order through a QR code or up at the kiosk and they bring you the food. No waiters. It’s kind of nice actually. The decor is fantastic and the river views is peaceful. We came here in winter so didn’t get to enjoy the outside but def want to come back in the summer.
The brisket was outstanding – the mix fat one. The lean one was too dry so I recommend go with the mixed fat.
Such a satisfying meal!
And the surrounding area is very cute for walking around and photo ops with brick background

Soul & Smoke was a pleasant surprise and easily one of my new favorite BBQ joints in Chicago. Granted, Chicago isn’t especially known for bbq, but it was my reluctancy that ended up making S&S a sleeper hit.

Soul & Smoke sits along the river as part of the Rockwell on the River event space. A bit unassuming on approach, but the patio space out back makes up for the minimalist set up.

The vibes are set, but what about the food? As I mentioned, my expectations weren’t exactly high, which is why I was thoroughly surprised.

In my opinion, the best all-around “bang for your buck” is the Prime Brisket dinner — which includes smoked brisket, mac & cheese, collard greens, and a cornbread muffin. The brisket serving size was plenty and the meat itself was succulent. The three included sides are IMO the staple bbq sides, and they didn’t disappoint. Good collard greens can be hard to come by, and luckily these ones had a great balance of flavor and texture. The mac was solid (I reccomend adding a protein for extra heartburning goodness). The cornbread muffin was delicious and moist, easily one of the highlights. I also had a side of gumbo that was excellent (I’m a sucker for andouille sausage).

Overall, if you’re lookin for a nice patio spot on the west side, Soul & Smoke is a great choice.

Soul & Smoke – Avondale is, for now, a simple food counter tucked inside the gorgeous Rockwell on the River space (there is a sign advertising a full restaurant coming soon) so you order at the kiosk, grab a buzzer or give your name, and wait for your food. Then you can grab a table in the lovely, spacious, dog-friendly dining area, or sit outside on the patio overlooking the river, or take your order to go.

I was excited to see a vegan item on the menu: a “Smokey Joe” sandwich, topped with pickles. It was delicious, and came with a free side. None of the sides appear to be vegan, but a few are vegetarian. I got the roasted sweet potato, which is vegan if you don’t add the whipped sweet cinnamon butter that comes on the side. The sweet potato was plenty sweet on its own and perfectly roasted. Overall I was tremendously pleased with the meal and the overall value. Tasty and filling.

The service was a little terse and unwelcoming. I stood at the counter for a minute, wanting to know the base of their Smokey Joe grounds (turns out it’s TVP) and neither of the employees asked whether I had any questions. They point everyone to the kiosk, located several feet away from the order counter, which makes one wonder why the order counter is there at all, when you get exasperated looks for standing there. Perhaps when the full restaurant opens it’ll feel a bit friendlier, but hospitality aside, it’s a great meal in a beautiful location.

I recently visited Soul and Smoke, and it was an absolutely satisfying experience from start to finish. The brisket was incredible—smoky, tender, and packed with bold, rich flavor that showed real skill behind the smoker. The mac and cheese stood out too; it was creamy, cheesy, and clearly crafted with care—comfort food at its finest. I also tried the shrimp and grits, which brought a flavorful southern flair to the table and did not disappoint. Every bite felt thoughtful and well-executed. The atmosphere was inviting, and the food quality made it clear these folks know what they’re doing. Overall, Soul and Smoke delivered a standout BBQ experience, and I’ll definitely be going back for more!

Delicious barbecue in a large warehouse. Right on the water, there is outdoor seating on the patio. Seating inside as well.

The brisket, pulled pork, mac and cheese and corn muffins were amazing!

We had our wedding welcome event hosted and catered with Soul & Smoke, and it was a lovely experience! For a 250 person Saturday event at the height of wedding season, they were not only the most affordable choice by far, but also a truly gorgeous and welcoming event space in their own right! We had a private patio overlooking the river, as well as the full indoor space. The food was excellent; vegan and vegetarian options were available, and S&S worked with us to customize our open bar package to fit our specific needs. The only thing I’d note is that the approximate serving guide is very generous — when in doubt, round down on the amount of catering! The staff was the biggest stand out here; Chef Jack and his team took absolutely excellent care of us, and were communicative and wonderful from start to finish. They really went above and beyond, and we felt so held by them on a chaotic and wonderful day!

This is a fantastic spot, especially for those who come by boat and dock. The ambience is relaxing, and there is an outdoor desk area. Tasty soul food, BBQ, and drinks are also available.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t skeptical that the bbq would be good. I was wrong, it was GREEEAT!! 5 stars definitely! Mario provided transparent opinions on the whole menu! Food was a perfect amount, temperature and came out in a timely fashion. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the food because it disappeared into my stomach lbs!
