If Google had more than five stars, Mert’s Heart and Soul in Charlotte, NC would definitely get them. EVERYTHING we had was absolutely delicious.

We tried the fried chicken, fried pork chops, collard greens, mac & cheese, and cornbread, and every single dish was fantastic. But my personal favorite had to be the yams — they were incredible.

This place truly lives up to the hype. Amazing food, full of flavor, and we cannot wait to go back!

Had our anniversary dinner 11/4 and everything we ordered was delicious. Highly recommend the soul rolls, salmon cakes and fried green tomatoes. We had the seafood platter and shrimp with grits entrees. So good and will be back before our next anniversary. Deondre was our kind, polite, fun and hard working server. Definitely made our first visit here memorable. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

The first time I was introduced to Mertz Cafe was back in 1996. I’ve talked about it ever since. Finally I’ve got the chance to revisit when my daughters and I took a girl’s weekend trip to see Wicked (10/24/25) When I tell you nothing changed about Mertz. I mean nothing! The atmosphere was top tier! The service was impeccable. The food….oh man…the food was awesome! So many restaurants would have changed after that amount of time has passed. Definitely won’t be staying away for that long again

My friend recommended this place to me for some “good soul food” while I was visiting from New Jersey. This was the best soul food I’ve ever had, and one of my favorite meals. The food came out quickly but home cooked and steaming hot. I got the fried chicken tenders, yams, mac ‘n cheese, and it comes with cornbread with some sweet butter. The chicken was seasoned perfectly, the mac was perfectly cheesy without being too much, and the yams were sweet, soft, and refreshing. The prices were great for the amount of food you receive. Additionally, my server Kashima was extremely kind, informative, and attentive. I highly recommend you don’t miss this spot when you’re in Charlotte!

We had a large group to celebrate black history month over lunch at a black owned establishment and my first thought was Merts! Our team still raves after the soul rolls and cornbread! We had amazing service from the server Drea who was very kind, attentive, and gave good recommendations on the best options to order. We will be back!

The host was rude. I ordered my food online at 3:36p and got there at 4:25p to pick it up. It wasn’t ready and the host got an attitude when I asked why it wasn’t ready when I ordered it almost an hr ago. He said they didn’t get it until 4:05p and they “don’t control when the orders come in”.

Then after waiting an additional 25 minutes; the food was bad. They gave me a burnt chicken wing which honestly should’ve been thrown out not served to a customer. I spent $26 for this horrible food and poor customer service. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Was walking down the street with my son & happen upon Merts. Great food, cute deco (based on theatre), wonderful service. The food was seasoned very well. The red Cajun sauce is the bomb. I poured that on everything. Prices are super great for the amount of food you get. Lots of salmon choices too. Can dine inside or outside. Highly recommended.

I was so disappointed with my order at Mert’s. I ordered the Shrimp Creole and Catfish and this is what I got. They served me a whitefish not Catfish in pieces, I got a thick tomato paste/sauce mix with shrimp in it that I didn’t even bother to touch. It looked gross. The yams and greens were okay. But for this to be a Charlotte staple and “Soul Food” spot, this was HORRIBLE!! There was nothing creole nor catfish about this. Stop passing off whitefish as catfish to a licensed and trained culinarian from Louisiana. AND DO NOT disrespect Creole cuisines with this mess.
I’m embarrassed for this place.

I visited yesterday and left highly disappointed. Soul food is my favorite cuisine, so I came in with high expectations, but the meal really missed the mark. The fried chicken was soggy instead of crispy, the yams were burnt and not sweet, and the mac & cheese barely had any cheese on it. The green beans had no flavor at all.

Honestly, the only decent thing on my plate was the cornbread. I ended up giving my to-go box to a homeless man outside—not because the food was good, but because it felt better than throwing it away.

Overall, my entire plate was bland and lacking a lot of flavor. The experience was extremely underwhelming.
