I can’t imagine going through the drive thru and getting home with a Chicken sandwich like this. The food isn’t cheap and we’re not asking for free food. We’re paying for this. Please do better Portillos
I liked the facade of the different told timey buildings on the outside. My boyfriend and I make it a thing to try different Portillo’s and see how they are decorated. Plus, we love supporting a Chicago business.
Our mission this visit was to try something off the secret menu. Their branding has been pushing a cute little Weiner dog. You press that on the kiosk and there are two items you can order – chili cheese fries and a triple decker burger. We opted for the chili cheese fries since we wanted Chicago dogs and couldn’t do a burger that tall but next time I’ll get the burger.
The chili cheese fries were good. It’s like your run of the mill chili cheese fries. It comes in its own box which is nice to make sure you don’t get your food everywhere.
We also got a polish and it had too much mustard like a lot of the mustard was on the wrapping, that’s how much it was like it couldn’t all fit on the polish and inside the bun. The Chicago dogs were good and right around of all the fixings for them. We left full either way.
This location isn’t the closest to us and doesn’t rank super high to drive all the way from home to but it’s a location I’d visit if I am close and craving Portillo’s.
We went to Portillo’s across the street. They have 4 kiosks that you can order from. Depending on what you order, they can make it fast. I ordered chili cheese dog, double rodeo burger, and breaded whitefish sandwich. Food overall was very mediocre. I’m not sure why Portillo’s is always busy, but the food was kind of bland. I had a better rodeo burger at Burger King, which costs less. The fish sandwich is better at McDonald’s for half the cost. Even the chili cheese dog was meh. This is 3 out of 5. There are better places in the area.
If you order for pick up, make sure you push through the sea of people crowding the counter where you get your food if you order at the register. Don’t be like me and wait politely at the place that says “pickups” for 10 mins only to find out you have to wait another 10 in the people pressed up against the counter like it’s first come first serve for food. And CERTAINLY don’t expect that you’re going to be able to grab your food off the pickup shelf and be in and out. It’s annoying to not be able to just grab it off a pickup shelf like pretty much EVERY other place but I get it if there’s an issue with theft. But to wait longer than people who just ordered at the register and have a MORE difficult time getting your food than just waiting for your number to be called is crazy. Because unless you want to be rude and push past people and try multiple times to get an employees attention that is flying around trying to take care of a million things at once, you might as well just order at the drive thru or register. I was hoping the first time I ordered pick up awhile ago was just a fluke, but nope, this is their “system” now. I always thought the “order online beforehand and go pick up” thing was supposed to be if you wanted to get in and out, but maybe Portillo’s thinks it’s better you always get the full Portillo’s experience. Some people have issues like autism etc where these types of situations are super overwhelming and REALLY like to avoid them whenever possible, usually pick up options at places like this are perfect but, at least not at this Portillo’s, 10x more overwhelming and uncomfortable than just going through the drive thru and that might end up being quicker.
What really stood out to me was the quick and amazing service. The staff were friendly and attentive, making my visit even more enjoyable. Surprisingly, the drive-thru was much less crowded than usual, which allowed for a smooth and speedy experience.
Overall, I highly recommend Portillo’s for anyone looking for a tasty meal with excellent service. I can’t wait to go back!
