Welcome to BALVANERA! We’re located at 1660 Smallman Street in the heart of Pittsburgh’s ever-emerging Strip District. We’re open for dinner 7 days a week & weekend brunch. The first project of Argentine Chef Fernando Navas (elBulli, Nobu, SUSHISAMBA), BALVANERA represents the cuisine and spirit of Buenos Aires – porteña cuisine with influences from the dynamic regions of Argentina. We hosted a Moms Night Out event at Balvanera this week and it was a flawless experience from start to finish! We worked with Noelle to reserve the Bodega in the bar area. Noelle was attentive, easy to work with, communicative and very accommodating to our specific needs. Our guests had the best time – the food was incredible, the vibe was perfect, and the service we received from River was excellent. The comments I was hearing from the group was that after always taking care of everyone else as moms, it was so nice to feel taken care of for the evening. Special mention goes to the Jamon Croquettes, Hamachi Crudo and the Alfajores! Kudos to Noelle, River, Chef Fernando, Meredith and the entire Balvanera team for an exceptional evening that left a lasting impression for our guests.

Quite possibly the best meal I’ve had in Pittsburgh at a restaurant. The small plates were phenomenal. Everything had a touch of attention and taste that was very unique. Also really enjoyed the mocktail selection and atmosphere. Lighting was really impressive. Steak was cooked to perfection. I am a sucker for chimichurri sauce and the steak was so good. I didn’t really even need the sauce. Their dessert menu is long and I was sad that I could only order a few things after such an extensive meal. Pistachio ice cream was potentially the best pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had. The date cake was also phenomenal.

Most tender steak that ive have in a long time. It was also cooked PERFECT at medium rare!!!!!

We started our dinner off with the Octopus Small Plate (Pulpa de Playo) which was paired with some greens and olive mixture that was very tasty and the octopus wasnt over cooked. Then we ordered our meal and decided on the Argentinean Filets. They were amazing! To go with our steak we ordered the Ceasar (which is big enough for 2-3 people), the Mushrooms (Setas Salteadas), and the Pure de Papas which was very creamy mashed potatoes with olive oil. There was only one thing I didn’t like from the assortment and only because it had too much salt in my opinion and that was the Ceasar Salad. The anchovies made it too salty but I did add pepper to it and that made it all better.

After dinner we got an Espresso Martini (super strong and delicious) and the Dulce De Leche Flan as well as the Almendrado which was homemade vanilla icecream with an almond brittle and it was by far the best dessert I have tasted in a LONG time that was gluten free from a restaurant.

The service was also very friendly and attentive and our server was very knowledgeable on the menu and was good at offering option for us since we are gluten free.

I really enjoyed the restaurant and the atmosphere and will most definitely be back!

our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable of the whole menu, offering a bunch of suggestions which was nice. i love trying a bunch of food so the small plates are great. i would go back and just order 5 caesar salads. the date cake was super yummy! this would be a great date night spot

Food, service and vibe were all great! Especially loved the steak, fries, empanadas (meat were better than the corn but both were good). The boquerones were a surprise hit while the crudo and pulpo were not as strong. I would definitely recommend and go back. Great cocktails and wines, as well.

Absolutely delicious, amazing service, and knowledgeable staff. They took extra care to make sure our wine pairing was perfect, and providing samples. There were several off the menu options which sounded amazing, but since it was our first time we stuck with the main menu items, all incredible, and our steaks were cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was great, such a unique place. 100% earned the 5 star rating. If I had to complain about anything I think the alcohol prices are a bit too high, but that definitely didn’t stop us!

Without a doubt this was my favorite meal and dining experience in 2025. From start to finish it was amazing. I am beyond impressed. Our server, Dave, was fantastic. His knowledge of the menu was impressive. He was attentive and kind. He really made the experience special. The food was absolutely delicious. We will definitely be back.

It’s rare that I’m throughly impressed. 10s all across the board. 5 stars. The food was scrumptious and my server Brent was awesome. They made my birthday experience one to remember. I will definitely be back. I got the chicken cutlet, steak, empanadas, and Cesar salad. Thank you Balvanera!!!! ❤️

We went for Sunday Brunch. The place looks really nice, keeping some of the industrial feel of the old building while giving it a clean and modern vibe. They were fairly busy and frequented by quite a few Spanish classy looking Spanish speakers which I think is a good sign for a Spanish restaurant. Their bar has a lot of high end tequilas and whiskeys, and the drinks were very good. The menu for brunch is tightened, which is good, although outside of salad everything was a bit rich and heavy, fortunately the drinks did a good job of cutting the food, however it might be nice to have some acidic dishes that can pair along side empanadas, steaks, and sausages. They have an espresso machine and can whip up I nice drink in that regard too. There were a bunch of little cookies they were saving for a special preparation of one of their coffees, which is a cool idea… But if you are going to tease them, at this price point, they should be generally available to go beside any coffee, which they were not. Price was fairly high, but the food and atmosphere mostly justify it. We got the empanadas, chorizo and guanchale sausage, and the steak, all of which I would recommend. I would caution that the steak serving size is like a two person affair for brunch. There is a parking garage right next door, which was very convenient.
