The soup pot always hits the spot and the generous portion is definitely shareable between two people. When I go with my sister, she and I share one bowl with 5-7 toppings and are STILL full. It’s also fun to check the food you want on the paper check box menu.
What I would recommend first/time goers:
⭐️ flat mung bean jelly noodles
– any meat (beef slices are a fave)
– enoki mushrooms
– any veggie (we like lotus root and napa cabbage)
The spice level is what you make of it! My sister and I usually get less spicy which has a kick but does not make the eating experience impossible — more than sriracha but less spicy than eating a thai chili pepper straight. My fiance gets spicy and I can always have a sip or two of the broth but that’s all ️
Service: The staff were attentive and quick. The cat waiter robot was really cute.
For two people with our own giant bowls each, we got ~6 toppings for around $20 each. I even took some home so I made two meals from mine.
I tried both the stir fried and soup pot. The heat level was impressive but manageable, making it a perfect dish for spice lovers.
Service was prompt and friendly, with staff eager to share recommendations. If you’re looking for an exciting dining experience in Philly, Chu Shang Spicy is definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for a delightful wave of heat that will leave you craving more!
Good: Peking duck wrap, fried fish fillet.
Be careful the spicy is pretty spicy. If you would normally order medium at other restaurants, I would suggest getting mild here.
The scallops were not worth it in the stir fry but we were impressed that some specialty ingredients like the pig’s blood, pea sprouts, and chanterelle mushrooms were available.
They do cook everything together so some of the leafy greens might be a bit wilted.
The fried fish was nicely crispy but tasted more like breading than fish
There was a robot that would bring bowls and plates over to you that was really cute and added to the experience. Good place to try in a very competitive neighborhood with respect to options for great food.
We ordered spicy dry pot but didn’t take picture. It was super salty, we took home and added more steamed veggies with the leftover seasoning. Their grapefruit green tea and lime black tea are also refreshing and served in a very large cup (great for sharing for 2).
