Kappo (かっぽう / 割烹) means cooking food with knives and fire. In simple Japanese terms, かっ / 割 means cutting, chopping and cooking food with knife, and so on. And ぽう / 烹 means boiling, cooking food with fire. So the combination of these two Japanese characters are a different expression of cooking with a knife and fire. Kappo is a dish that is improvised by the customer’s order and can be enjoyed at the counter or at the table just in front of the kitchen without much formality. From now on, Kappo will be held in Miyabi restaurant, Santa Monica. So, we often refer to Japan’s dictionary as an instant gourmet dish that can be easily explained in a short explanation.

We had several appetizers from the lamb chop to a soft shell tempura crab, and then we went on to an assorted sushimi and other great dishes..
Everything was delicious and I have to say it was one of the best soft shelf crabs I’ve ever had. I order it all the time and in all types of restaurants, and I would say this was the best.
The only thing that didn’t pan out was the lamb chop, it was way overcooked. Lamb is supposed to be served medium-rare. Whether you like medium-rare or not. This was well done, but I’m not dinging him for that.
Otherwise, we had a wonderful time, great service, great people working there really enjoyed it.
The staff has always been very pleasant and the booths offer a bit of privacy that’s greatly appreciated. The decor hasn’t been updated in the 7 or so years we’ve been coming here so it may not be as fancy as some of the other restaurants in the immediate area but I’d happily bring friends or family here and could easily recommend it as a date spot.
I couldn’t help but take several bites before taking a picture but the food is soo AMAZING! ✨️✨️✨️
You can tell they care about quality and presentation. Cozy vibe, great service, and amazing food. Can’t wait to come back!
The Omakase experience is a must-try, offering a curated selection of sushi and sashimi that feels like a true culinary journey. Every bite bursts with fresh ingredients and masterful preparation. Standouts for me were the Truffle Salmon Carpaccio and Albacore Sashimi – absolute perfection!
The service is equally impressive. The staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations and ensure every detail is just right.
Whether it’s a special occasion or just a regular night out, Kappo Miyabi delivers an unforgettable dining experience. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine at its finest!
