Cozy local Cuban sandwich shop with great value! Fair amount of space inside, and few tables outside if the weather’s good. Went to pick up lunch on a Saturday around noon and there wrre a few customers, but it wasn’t packed. Sandwiches took about 15 minutes to be ready. Staff were very friendly. Two sandwiches, the Elena Ruz and the Medianoche, are listed on their website but not described–see attached pictures for their in-house descriptions, and they both only come in large (8″) size.

Ordered a classic Cuban and an Elena Ruz (chose normal cream cheese and strawberry jam), both large, and two guava cream cheese pastelitos. All were very good, and made with high quality ingredients. Will certainly be back to try out more of the menu!

Visiting Birmingham to tour the UAB Solar House, I knew we had to sample some good eats before heading home. I selected Kool Korner Sandwiches because sadly the main spot to get a good Cuban in Huntsville closed a few years ago, so it seemed like an opportune time to get that craving met.

The location is a little nondescript and hard to see from the street (at least the way we came), but there’s ample parking. Stairs lead up to a small front area (few chairs and tables for outside dining) and then into the somewhat dimly lit restaurant. It seemed clean inside and I liked the relative straightforwardness of their menu: sandwiches, a few soups, and some odds and ends like tamales, empanadas, and pastelitos.

Counter service was exceedingly friendly and attentive to our orders, ensuring we got exactly what we wanted and offering to remove any topics we found offending. I got the chicken sandwich, while my mom got a traditional Cuban while my dad tried the medianoche sandwich. Most sandwiches follow a standard topping formula of cheese, mayo, mustard, and pickles on Cuban style bread; the main differentiator is your protein of choice. And, of course, the medianoche comes on softer egg dough bread.

We were all very happy with our sandwiches. We each got regular size with chips; the full thing was plenty for me and my parents both saved half of each of their sandwiches for later. I tried a bite of each sandwich and they were all delicious in their own way. The cheese and mayo make it nice and gooey, but the bread, mustard, and pickles really make the sandwich — such a distinct and delicious combination. None of the meats were dry, not even the chicken, and the bread was so nice and crispy (or soft, in the case of the medianoche). Although I definitely enjoyed my sandwich, I think the Cuban and medianoche were a little bit better — I guess they’re classics for a reason 🙂 I just tend to not eat a ton of pork, but that’s on me lol.

I will say I didn’t really care for their chip selection. It was mostly a combination of Voodoo and Golden Flake chips. I probably would’ve gone Voodoo if they’d had a standard flavor available, but they didn’t, so I wound up with Golden Flake. I know that Golden Flake originated in Birmingham so I guess you gotta represent, but unfortunately I just don’t really like the way their chips taste.

I also ordered a cream cheese and guava pastelito for later. They forgot to bring it out with our meals but rectified it quickly when I went to ask about it before we left and gave me a to-go box with it. It was deliciously flaky and the guava was so yummy. I wished for a teeny bit more cream cheese but all in all it was a treat!

Overall, a highly enjoyable experience here! I’d love to try some of the other “extras” like the empanadas and tamales, and of course I’d return for another sandwich too. 🙂

Ordered the large Cuban. The sandwich had one paper thin piece of ham, and 3oz of roasted pork. The pork had a cinnamon taste which is unusual for a typical Cuban sandwich. Needless to say I won’t be back.

Went here for the first time. I was surprised by the sandwich. It just wasn’t what I expected. It was just giving deli meat…
Galician soup was really good though and if you get the bowl, it’s enough for more than one person. Sweet tea was out but fountain drinks were really carbonated. Fast service.
Tamale was dry, and I didn’t care for the pork inside. Little pork cubes.
Cuban, tamale & soup 19.99 + drink 2.08
The online menu photos need updated. Prices have increased.

Great food and friendly staff! We got the black bean soup, a pork tamale, guava & cheese pastelitos, and two of the sandwiches for lunch. Everything was really good and the guava & cheese pastelitos (pastries) secured this spot as one of our favorite cuban places. I’m not even from the Birmingham area, but would go out of my way to come back here.

This business moved to Birmingham from Atlanta and it was really missed. They have the best Cuban sandwich anywhere! I wish the owner would sell franchises so others could enjoy them.

I ordered the classic cuban sandwich. It was delicious! The bread, although very good, wasn’t the same as cuban bread you would get in Miami.
