I’m not a pork eater but gave them a try with the BBQ chicken it taste spoiled. The Cole slaw was on point and the potato salad needed to be cut up but the taste was good. NYC.we tried it but won’t be back.

So, let start of by saying the locals have always supported and said the food is good. And to be honest if my co-worker did not bring me the food and didn’t tell me where it came from I would not have been able to know how good the food was. I had always wanted to try this restaurant but what kept me from going was the store front. When you drive up it looks abandon. I didn’t know if they were still in business or not. They really should make the store front look welcoming I’m sure they will get more business if they just made small inexpensive changes.

I lived in Hampton for about 3 years and always passed this place, never crossed my mind to stop by because the building looks abandoned, until a buddy recommended me to check them out. Don’t be fooled by the look of the building inside or out. Hands down the best bbq sandwich around, flavor is consistent and not expensive at all. I stop by at least 2 times a week. Don’t forget to leave a tip if u can.

I moved to Virginia from North Carolina (aka the best bbq state in the nation) a few years ago, and while I love VA very much, I sure do miss NC bbq. I’d tried some of the options on offer in the Hampton Roads area, and none of them ever really scratched that Carolina itch…
Until I tried Wilkes Bar-B-Q.
I swear I heard a little Hallelujah chorus when I had my first bite of that chopped plate (with slaw & baked beans, of course). Perfectly seasoned, just the right amount of that vinegar tang, melts in your mouth like butter. Not only is it the best bbq I’ve had in VA, I dare say it’s some of the best damn bbq I’ve had, full stop.
Five stars. Ten out of ten. I will absolutely be back, and so will my family when they come up to visit. Wilkes is the real deal!

Hands down… Best BBQ in VA. Locals favorite for half a century. To some, it’s a hidden gem, and to others, it’s a well-known fact – there’s no BBQ like WILKES BBQ. I get mine ATW All the Way (w slaw and hot sauce), always with a side potato salad, which my husband and I agree is our favorite – the recipe is perfect! Sometimes, we fancy Northern Beans, and other times, the bbq beans do the job. Heck, sometimes we get a small side of each. THE COLLARDS ARE TO DIE FOR, only available friesh in season. Home-made slices or whole pies available — SWEET POTATO PIE like grandmas. This place is If you haven’t tried, you’re missing out!
Updated Review: All of the above still apply. Wanted to add that the reason for the 5 stars for food is obvious – just order and try for yourself. The service is always impeccable. You get what you order, quick, and fresh. The whole family is very friendly and we enjoy catching up during each visit. It’s a wonderful atmosphere. I love seeing multiple generations behind the counter, working as one. A family favorite!

Visiting.my home town of Hampton and searching for NC bar-b-q. Found Wilkes and gave it a try. It’s a carry-out only place. It was yummy and great food. Even the sides were good. Give it a try.

The baked beans was all right. However, the BBQ was cold, without any sauce and absolutely flavorless. The “meat” was white (please see attached photo). It surely wasn’t beef. To top off, the owner is somewhat rough around the edges, which discouraged us from going back there to return the food. We literally threw it away and got food from somewhere else. Huge waste of time and money.

The absolute best BBQ in Virginia. If you’re in the area you have to go get you something off the menu. You can’t go wrong with anything that you choose.
