Very good food, an amazing historical building, all in a very cute town. We went for brunch on a Sunday. The pankakes and bacon, with a side of hashbrowns were delicious. My husband got a cheese burger which was also very good. We also got a coffee and a mimosa. We were able to walk around inside to take in the history of the inn. It was a great experience.

We were staying at the Griswold Inn and were excited to hang in the bar and enjoy some live music. It did not disappoint. The food was good. My wife LOVED her butternut ravioli. My fish and chips were ok. They weren’t bad but very ordinary I’d 100% try something else next time.
We went on a Sunday evening I believe and this place was busy all day Sunday. It must be popular locally because I wasn’t expecting hundreds of people to be coming in and out. We went to other place in walking distance that were borderline empty.
So sadly I took no pictures of the food, but for some reason took a picture of the check so I added that for whatever reason… I forgot I downed that Irish Coffee…

Such a unique place! It’s just oozing with history and stories. The decor really fits the theme too. Food and service were both great! They had live piano playing in the taproom and a band slated for later. We had a great time overall!

A truly iconic Historic coastal New England venue unlike any other. Atmosphere and maritime art collection is truly in authentic league of own which is difficult to match anywhere including walkability and charm of Downtown Essex. Have yet to encounter similar preserved Historic space in Coastal New England in which to feel as comfortable.

Stopped in for a drink and early dinner. Someone was playing the piano. You could sit inside or outside. We ordered drinks and food which were both good. We shared the steak, mash potato’s and asparagus.

Kind of loud for my taste, but the food was good, and the service was good. (I had the grilled peach flatbread & the margarita of the day) I had a late lunch, thinking the crowds would be done with lunch, I was waiting for my airbnb to open. The margarita really hit the spot.

On Saturday, I had lunch at the Griswold Inn for the second time—but it was my first time dining inside.
The Griswold Inn has been operating continuously since June 1776, a month before the United States declared independence. The place feels like a museum, filled with artwork and historical artifacts. The walls are completely covered with pictures, and the dining area has very little natural light coming through the windows. It gave me the feeling of being in a basement, where you can’t quite tell if it’s day or night.
The food prices were comparable to most restaurants in the area.
What sets the Griswold Inn apart from many other historic inns in the state is its prime location—it’s right in the heart of a beautiful, waterfront town. Essex is charming and pedestrian-friendly, with a Main Street lined with well-preserved historic homes and shops, all on level ground.
Essex is a wonderful destination for a day trip.

A CT classic. Definitely old school vibe, but warm and cozy on a cold winter’s day. Sat in the tap room which is first come first serve for seating. Didn’t have a long wait, and the menu had plenty of options. Had the potato bisque with chicken salad sandwich and it was excellent. Great balance of flavors! Service was quick and friendly as well. All around, great spot for lunch if you’re in the area!

Our waitress was great. But it took 45 mins to get our food 🙁 and it wasn’t THAT busy.
Fish n chips were rubbery. Bread and fresh churned butter were delicious. Would like to come back but we really weren’t that impressed with THIS time. Parking during peak times is tough to find. Recommend going early or after supper rush.
