I just moved to Savannah a month ago with my fiance, and hadn’t had a chance to go here until today. And sadly we’ll l be moving away again in 2 weeks. Biggest regret was that we didn’t try this place sooner!
Hirano’s has great quality fish and their imported toro, uni, and shirako was amazing. The ama-ebi was so good too. And I asked him if he takes the head and fries them, he said he can, and he did, and it was DELICIOUS also. Very fresh and flavorful. Also, they had a jelly fish appetizer that I think was soaked in Japanese style pickled plum. Highly recommend if you love jellyfish and sour flavors. And the umejiso (pickled plum, cucumber, shiso leaf) roll. Loved it!
And I’m not an expert sushi person, but I did live in Osaka for two years (2022-2024) and tried so many different places there. And I gotta say, Hirano’s is a great place to satisfy my sushi hunger.
Also, very lucky that we came here when we did. He said that he only gets shirako once or twice a year for a very short time. We were able to coincidentally be there at the right time.
I pay and get out of there and get home and guess what. One sauce…that’s it…..I might just as well have been talking to a piece of stone! By the way….the same rude voice on the phone was the teenager that put the stuff in the bag and rang my order up. Is this a big deal? Not really,,,,,,but it is when you’ve been working all day, tired and don’t feel like cooking and just want your usual simple meal the way you’ve been getting it for years. I learned something when my grandparents were in the restaurant and bar business. They said “there’s no such thing as a loyal customer” and they were right….cause they’ll never see my money again. If you don’t pay attention every minute you are going to ruin either yours or someone else’s business! The bottom line is this……….it’s not about her. She’s a child and she may have been trained maybe a week with no follow up or monitoring. She still wasn’t familiar where everything was. Management is everything….if you don’t teach them and monitor and evaluate and correct, you’ll get what you get what you get. You put out a great product for a reasonable price so protect your interest…..slow down and pay attention.
Very friendly staff, quick services.
If you are into Uni they arrive freshly every Thursday night, highly recommended.
I go every few months and always order the Hirano Specialty roll (pictured) and glass of the plum wine. The sampler is also sensational for sharing (or being stingy). This is the only place where I’ll eat the sashimi tentacles.
10/10.
*SUSHI (We know and Eat Raw as well)*
-Guys at sushi bar are not wearing gloves… walking in and out of back kitchen…. No Good
-Sushi fish was not chilled, it’s warm.
-The Special Roll on the board “Key West” calls for Fried calamari inside.. looks like they microwaved the calamari sitting , making it rubbery and they still served it. That’s a “No No”
– Crab on top of Roll was way too mushy with Mayo… Mayo’d over the top.
– Shrimp tempura is a southern style batter.. not tempura..
*Grilled/Teriyaki foods*
-Are pre cooked and keep alongside until someone orders ie: Veggies soggy
-Very oily Soba noodles
-Fried rice was a little funky
Service was ok (they’re trying though)… had to go find napkins and get our own chopsticks…
-Atmosphere is fine..
Look, if you want some Supermarket style sushi and teriyaki in a dining atmosphere…this is your place.
Sorry owners- this is the truth… good luck.
