We arrived around 3 PM and were greeted by a friendly waitress who took great care of us. My dad and I ordered the BBQ ribs, my husband got the fish sandwich, and my daughter ordered mac and cheese.
The food came out quickly, but the ribs looked and tasted old, as if they’d been reheated. My husband said his fish sandwich was bland with very little fish, and my dad’s coleslaw was sour like it had gone bad. I tried the ribs myself, and after two bites, I had to rush to the restroom to throw up (I’m 7 months pregnant). The bathrooms were also dirty, with no toilet paper in my stall and an unflushed toilet I flushed them myself and pushed the paper towel trash down for them.
The fried squash I ordered was soggy and oily, though the fried okra my dad got was decent. The coffee was old (the waitress admitted it was from that morning), but she did keep the sweet tea refilled.
When we returned the ribs, a German cockroach ran across our table toward the food my daughter dropped. (My dad said I should have took a photo of the roach before I flicked it but I panicked) Shortly after, the chef came out defensively explaining how they “pre-broil” their ribs before reheating them to serve, but they still tasted spoiled and asking where we are from making it seem a little offensive. He eventually took them off the bill, and we only paid for the kids’ meal, the fish sandwich and the drinks. Crazy how a BBQ RESTAURANT can’t get a bbq meal right.
But the waitress was the best part of our visit, but unfortunately, everything else was a nightmare. We won’t be returning.
Ps- if you want to experience an episode of kitchen nightmares I’d say go here.
My boyfriend and I decided to dine there this evening, being lured in by the “under new management” sign for the upteenth time.
I’ve been dining at this restaurant on and off for three years, as I’m a local to Rockwell. I’ve seen it change hands numerous times within those years, and it hasn’t gotten any better.
I love a good hometown barbeque grill look just like anyone else. The nostalgic vibe is to die for, however, there are some fixtures that look like they haven’t been replaced since that nostalgic time, more directly, there are several places in the ceiling in the dining hall that look like they’re about to cave in. It’s eerily quiet in the dining hall, as there’s no music, only a gentle trickle of music coming from the kitchen, of which you cannot hear anything. At the time we attended, we were not the only patrons, and I barely heard any motion from the kitchen. Usually when restaurants have a call window as big as the one here, you can at least hear the sizzling from pans, or the sounds of dishes and utensils clattering together, but I heard nothing but the quiet music. I found this to be extremely off-putting, and leads me to believe that my meal was microwaved. No matter where you sit, the tables are usually always sticky, or have some type of residue on them from previous patrons. Which, sounds a bit nitpicky, in writing, but coming from someone who has dined here multiple times at different times of the day, and there has been no change? For years? Something’s up. The menus were the exact same, nothing changed. I understand that new management means that; new management, not new restaurant, but don’t put “The New Johnny’s” on the menu if everything’s the exact same. Now, onto the main course. My meal was two grilled pork chops with Cajun seasoning, a side of green beans, and fries with ranch dressing. My boyfriend’s was a Philly Cheesesteak sub, also with green beans and fries, and he ordered two dinner rolls.
When my meal was brought to me, it was served on a sectioned plate, which reminded me of what you’d put a toddler’s food on, and my green beans were served in a Styrofoam bowl, which tells me that they would rather contribute to product waste than wash a dish. This statement is further cemented by the fact that my boyfriend and I both bore witness to a member of waitstaff rinsing out the same glass in the front sink, and was used to refill every single guest’s drinks, including ours. That’s not inherently unhygienic since they weren’t touching the guest’s glass and the refill glass’s rims directly together, but honestly, it’s weird and gross. Back to the food. Pork chops are more apt to dry as they cook, I understand this, but these lacked every single molecule of moisture that could’ve possibly been left in them. I fear if I had not asked for Cajun seasoning, they would’ve been bland, and practically inedible. Speaking of bland, my green beans tasted like they hadn’t been seasoned whatsoever, and the small pieces of the pork fat used in the cooking seemed old and flavorless. The fries surprisingly were fine, aside from the ranch used to dip them in. They must’ve changed the recipe here, since the old ranch did not taste like a thick, sweet mayonnaise.
The rolls were greasy, and the side butter served with them was akin to pure lard. No flavor whatsoever. I wasn’t sure if I was even eating butter at that point. I understand that this isn’t a chain restaurant, and is local, but it’s customers should not settle for subpar food just because it’s local. I’d much rather take my coin somewhere where you can actually feel the heart and soul of the kitchen in your food.
When I first started coming here, it felt homey, and warm, now it just feels like a poorly oiled machine churning out slop until it inevitably breaks. I want the best for this restaurant, but I don’t have high hopes it will last much longer. I am surprised it has lasted 17 years. This was the nail in the coffin. We will not be returning.
Initially I was just wanting a dang refill for my coffee (which also never came) but after watching that for 30 minutes I truly wanted nothing that came from her hands.
We will NEVER be back.
Went to the restroom noticed the light switch hanging off the wall with the wires exposed, GFI was busted up and one of the metal supports In a stall was hanging down which i have included pictures to prove.
This was my 1st time eating there and possibly my last.
