Social Profile:

Authentic Creole Louisiana food and seafood that’s made fresh daily! That’s our guarantee to you. We don’t use canned sauces, powdered mixes, boxed desserts or frozen dishes like many New Orleans restaurants. We make everything in-house from our cocktail sauce to our decadent white chocolate praline bread pudding and everything in between! Many of our recipes still stay true to Grandma Annie Marullo’s original Creole dishes over 80 years ago. We get all our fresh Louisiana Gulf seafood from local distributors who know to bring us the biggest jumbo shrimp and oysters available. Come see for yourself and find out why we are rated one of the best New Orleans restaurants on Trip Advisor!

Boiled seafood by the pound plus Cajun fare in a circa-1803 space with outdoor & balcony seats.

The French Market Restaurant is wonderful little hometown place to have lunch or dinner. The service was a little slow, but once seated they were very attentive and timely bringing out our order. The atmosphere reminds me of a small southern eateries with big mama in the kitchen and the food will have you asking for more. I had the seafood gumbo and the shrimp poboy sandwich. The gumbo was nicely seasoned, could have been a little thicker and richer, but the poboy was just right with that special mayonnaise to go with it. The price was, in a word, family friendly. When you get to New Orleans enjoy the food, shops, museums, and all that city has to offer.

Pros:
– Quality of food: Authentic and Delicious. We ordered charbroiled oysters and jambalaya.
– Service: Quick and Friendly Staff
– Smells amazing before you even enter the restaurant – the open boil window to the street draws you in!

Cons:
– Bathrooms filthy and no soap or paper towels

I would rate 5 star based on the pros. But hygiene is important (especially in food service). Thankfully, I had a bottle of hand sanitizer in my bag.

The service was fantastic! I found the food a little over-priced, but still really good. We got the chargrilled oysters (a MUST here), a cup of gumbo, and a cup of crawfish bisque.

The construction fence seemed to be blowing the crawfish boil seasoning into the restaurant, so there was a little coughing going on from the spices. Hopefully the construction will end soon so this place can get the business it deserves!!

Casual place. We had lunch there. Food was below average. Fish had bad taste like it was spoiled. I told our server Carl R about this issue, but he ignored it and just kept pushing us to order drinks from the bar. Also, thay used a cheap trick to make a dish volume visually bigger. They put three chunks of bread on the bottom of the plate and cover bread with fried seafood. Check my photos. Nothing special about this place.

Great New Orleans food with Saints playing. I had the catfish po boy and my wife had the burger. The highlight was the boudin balls and the bread pudding. Outrageously good!
We had a great meal. Our server was there at every turn and again boudin!

Paige was our bartender at the The Market Cafe. What a fantastic experience! We came twice and really enjoyed her personality and hospitality! Of all the places to drink in the French Quarter, we chose to return here a second time. What a wonderful spot to people watch and enjoy a great drink and listen to great music. Plus, Paige is excellent at what she does- making people feel welcome! Thanks, Paige for making our day!

An amazing place to grab an early dinner. We had excellent crab legs and chargrilled oysters. The bartender was pleasant and attentive, and the whole vibe of the place is relaxed and even romantic.

We came here from Tennessee looking for some really good food to try on our trip. When we got in and ordered our appetizer it took 20 minutes alone to get that then ordered our food that took a hour to get to our table . We were finally happy to get our food and this is what are hamburger looked like RAW could not even eat it then when I asked about it she said “that’s what you get” did not even offer to fix it did not even offer to get a manager. Our drinks were empty the whole time she one checked on us one time the whole 2 hours we where there. Then on top of that charged us a 20% fertility tip very upset with this and will never be going back.

Best crab ive had in New Orleans also had a Mule cocktail that was perfect. Portions were large and everything came out well seasoned and on point. We sat on the balcony and enjoyed a nice sunny day. Our server was fast, friendly, helpful. We even exchanged numbers before the end of our meal

Excited to come back again soon

If you’re looking for that classic New Orleans Creole experience right in the heart of the French Quarter, French Market Restaurant and Bar – The Original is exactly the kind of place that feels authentically local and spirited. Established decades ago and still rooted in family-run tradition, it has that storytelling charm where food and history feel intertwined.

The menu leans into fresh Louisiana seafood and Creole staples — think chargrilled oysters, gumbo, shrimp po’boys, and hearty Cajun favorites — all made from scratch with ingredients shipped in daily from local Gulf distributors. I especially like the way the food manages to be bold and flavorful without trying to impress you with flashiness. It’s honest, satisfying, and steeped in New Orleans culinary heritage.

What makes this place memorable for me is the energy. Sitting out on the balcony over Decatur Street with a cold drink in hand, watching street life and live music vibes below — that’s classic NOLA right there. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, though it leans more toward lively tourist-friendly than quiet neighborhood vibe.

In short, if you want a taste of New Orleans with history, hearty Creole food, and a fun French Quarter setting, this restaurant gives you exactly that — even if it isn’t the fanciest spot in town.
