I spent $76 buying platters for my family. I have the chicken fried rice and chicken wings. The rice was disappointing at best. The chicken in it had a very suspicious texture to say the least. After getting over the look and texture of the chicken in my rice, I decided to have a girl at the actual wings. Unfortunately they tasted like burnt grease. I would like to note that the highlights of the night were the duck sauce and fortune cookie – both of which came from outside sources. Highland Garden, you’ve let me down if I could give your food a negative star I would. to end this on a good note I will say the service was great and the people were very friendly…
So, I had to edit this review because I grabbed another fortune cookie opened it and there was no fortune inside. I hope that’s not a sign.

Drowning in sauce it’s all sauce gross. You can’t even taste the vegetables or meat just overtaking sweet sauce. Had to drain my veggies on the rice to remove all the excess sauce. Rice was so soggy and soupy you can’t even eat it

This place has been going downhill for at least a year. I have been going here for at least 10 years but I am done with this place.
Their prices are getting OUTRAGEOUS $11 for wings? Really. They are taking advantage of the inflation going on. In other words they are price gouging people.
I used to go there at least twice a month and always spent around $50 each visit totalling about $100 a month. Or $1200 a year.
No more. I actually got ripped off for the $11 wings about 2 months ago. Before I leave I always ask if everything is in the bag and the lady (who knows who I am) replied yes.
Nothing worse than getting home (takes me 20 minutes to get here) and finding that they forgot to put everything in the bag. I called up and complained and she didn’t know how to refund my credit card and offered me a credit for next time.
I instead chose to drive back (20 minutes each way) to have her pay me in cash. I just didn’t trust them to “give me a credit”
Her attitude was bad. Like it was my fault. She says to me screaming “do you know how many wings I make in a day”…
I am like do you know how much money I have spent here the past 10 years? She didn’t give a damn. Goodbye Highland Garden.
Anyways, do yourself a favor and avoid this place. If you are looking for a good Chinese Restaurant you might have to travel a bit.
I found a better place in Wallingford right past the Cheshire line.
Highland Garden will NEVER see me again.. I even told the lady that you are gonna lose longtime customers if you keep raising your prices every 2 months like this. Wings have gone from $5.50 for 6 (I still have a menu from 2 years ago) to $11… In 2-3 years
Are you kidding me? Wings are cheap in the grocery stores..
I hope they go out of business.

I have been going to Highland Garden for over 30 years. I always consider this the best Chinese take out. It must be under new management. The food is horrible! The people are rude. I won’t be going back nor will I ever recommend this place.

The first time I followed reviews and I’m disappointed. I started off with an eggroll as they’re my fav. I know if I don’t like it I’m not going to like the food. The eggroll was bigger than typical eggrolls. The texture was off. Instead of crunchy and was tough on the outside and hard to bite. As if it was baked or something instead of frued. The filling was okay maybe i would’ve liked it fried longer. The rice was definitely not fried. No oil, no flavor, as if it was booked. The chicken was the best thing I had but still not the greatest. I spent about $75 and I regret it. Will definitely not order again. I guess I recommend for someone looking for a not fried healthier version of Chinese food.

Since Highland Gardens has been sold, the new owners are not maintaining the quality of the food and the potions are smaller. Previously the containers were so full that they they were bulging.
I recently ordered egg drop soup that was thin and watery with just s very little egg in it.
I have been a customer since this restaurant opened. I will no longer order from here.
I miss the former owners who rsn which was once the best Chinese takeout in Waterbury.

I wanted to give the new owners a chance before anything but the few times I did, I was extremely disappointed. Everything was over cooked and extremely salty. Sad that the original owners have left, as I was a regular… This was the best Chinese food in town, but I will probably never be back 🙁

Food is nasty! NO STAR If you enjoy this food please do yourself a favor and try somthing else! The crab Rag taste like fish and shrimp. No flavor in the sauces at all maybe it’s missing the MSG! I feel sick after eating this. I will not return. If you from NY this is not the Chinese for you. Try at your own risk. Hate to throw money out but im saving my own life here. Sadly the lady was the best part of the experience.

Best take out Chinese food I have ever had! Portions are large. Dumplings were delicious and fresh, I ate I believe 3 before pic! Sesame chicken best ever had, not to sweet, nice crunch. I am not a huge fan of Chinese food, maybe eat it 2- 3 x per yr. However this is the only place I will go. Customer service was great. Clean in the inside! Was a little wait, as they stay super busy. Call ahead. They do offer delivery.
