The experience was excellent—thoughtful food, attentive service, and a menu that rewards curiosity.

The surprise of the night was the green beans. I expected them to be fine, maybe forgettable. Instead, they were outstanding—deeply flavored, perfectly cooked, and easily one of the best vegetable dishes I’ve had in recent memory. Not something I’d normally order, but they’re the kind of dish that lingers long after the meal ends.

The shrimp croquettes were another highlight: beautifully crisp on the outside with a moist, delicate center. The curry flavor led confidently, followed by a clean shrimp finish. Balanced, intentional, and very well executed.

The scallion pancakes were solid but unremarkable. They do their job, but in a lineup this strong, they didn’t stand out.

The truffle dumplings, however, were a hit—especially for my wife, who declared them her favorite dish of the night. The buttery corn sauce, truffle-scented edamame, and tofu filling worked together seamlessly. Rich without being heavy, and clearly a crowd-pleaser.

For mains, the duck drunken noodles were excellent. The duck was exceptionally tender, not at all gamey, and paired perfectly with the noodles—easily the best entrée we ordered.

The short ribs were the one disappointment. While the flavor was good, the texture missed the mark—noticeably chewy and lacking the melt-in-your-mouth quality you hope for from a dish like this.

Service throughout was warm and attentive. My wife enjoyed the wine selection, and I was impressed with the ginger cardamom shrub, which was thoughtful and well balanced.

Overall, Queen’s English delivers a creative, satisfying experience with a few truly standout dishes—especially those green beans, which I’m still thinking about. A strong showing, and absolutely worth a visit.

Fancy, good meal! Some of the best Chinese food I’ve had. We sat at the chefs counter so we could see the action. Small, intimate vibes. Delicious food. Try the grilled octopus (even though it’s morally ambiguous). Dessert is not to be missed. Staff was super friendly and courteous. They comped a round of drinks for us because we were waiting a bit, though honestly didn’t feel that long.

Absolutely amazing experience celebrating a birthday here. We had a group of 10 of us, so we had a pre fixe menu which left us all incredibly full and content.
Highlights included the eggplant, scallion pancake, duck drunken noodles, and the whole fried branzino.
Our server, Nomai, was so accommodating and such a pleasure! Will definitely be coming back 🙂

Brought my in-laws here after seeing the James Beard Award nomination (best of luck btw!). The staff were very accommodating and friendly. We had a big dog with us and were able to have a cozy and comfortable dining experience on the patio amid high winds because it was covered and there were ample heaters.

Food-wise, Queen’s English is outstanding. I was most impressed by the truffle dumplings and charred broccolini, but everything we ate was flavorful and delicious. I believe we were served by Sarah Thompson herself and she recommended by mother-in-law a fabulous Chardonnay that she wouldn’t stop raving about even after the meal. I personally recommend the Jade Scorpion green peppercorn pilsner. Came in on a Tuesday evening so we also had $8 martinis that were delicious. Their ice creams – toasted sesame with candied walnuts and chocolate-Szechuan pepper – were delightful too!
Definitely returning, not only for these flavors but also for a great restaurant to spend quality time at.

Enjoyed a pretty great night here with friends! The food? Delicious. The service? Top notch. The atmosphere? Friendly and warm. The truffle dumplings were my favorite along with the branzino. I will also say they make excellent cocktails here.

This restaurant came highly recommended to me, but honestly, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Despite the $25 reservation fee, which is supposed to be refunded once you dine, the overall experience felt underwhelming. The food was good, with the standout dish being the truffle dumplings—definitely the highlight of the meal. The rest of the dishes were just okay. The interior had a nice, cozy vibe, and the bathroom was impressively clean. While it was a one-time experience, I don’t think I would return.

I really enjoyed Queens English. The outdoor seating sets the mood, creating great vibes, especially on those nice weather evenings in DC. There is nothing like it. Beyond the charming atmosphere, the food and service were both in my experience. For a memorable meal, I’d recommend the dumplings, the perfectly charred broccolini, and the drunken duck noodles.

Queen’s English: A Masterclass in Modern Cantonese, Served with Heart!!

In a city saturated with ambitious restaurants, Queen’s English rises above—not with pretense, but with pure soul. Tucked into a vibrant, palm-lined corner of the neighborhood, this intimate gem from husband-and-wife team Henji Cheung and Sarah Thompson delivers an unforgettable symphony of Hong Kong cuisine, heritage, and hospitality.

I dined with four friends, and we did what any sensible food lovers would do: we ordered everything on the menu and shared it family-style. Every single dish—not one exception—was a revelation. Chef Henji, whose culinary roots trace back to the New Territories of Hong Kong, brings childhood memories to life through wok-fired precision, nostalgic flavors, and wildly inventive texture play. He even came out to speak with us personally—a moment of warmth and humility that matched the night’s exceptional service.

From the whisper of ginger and scallion in delicate seafood to bold punches of soy and chili, the menu walks a thrilling tightrope between tradition and innovation. You can taste the streets of Hong Kong and the finesse of New York kitchens in every bite. Each dish is layered, alive, and unapologetically fun.

The vibe? Electric. Whether perched at the Chef’s Counter watching the kitchen and bartenders in motion, or lounging on the dog-friendly patio, Queen’s English makes you feel like a welcome guest at an elevated dinner party. Though we opted for casual dining indoors. It’s no exaggeration to say this is best-in-class dining—not just in D.C., but anywhere.

Final verdict:
Queen’s English isn’t just a meal. It’s a celebration—of culture, craft, family, and fearless flavor. Chef Henji and Sarah have created something truly magical, and if you’re lucky enough to get a table, prepare to be mesmerized. We were.

You have to check out Queen’s English and it’s Hong Kong cuisine with a French flare. The restaurant is cozy and fun with tasty plates best shared. My favorites were the chicken and octopus dishes, though regret not trying their truffle dumplings. Next time! Also, amazing service 🙂

A cute place in a cozy spot filled with joy and anticipation. The menu changes often so, if you look online and salivate at one of the photos, there is a good chance what you desire has morphed into something else. But fear not, the chef has surely created something new you willingly dive into.

I had the beef short ribs Chinese style. As my mother would say, when she is commenting on a dish, it was nice. That is a higher praise than most, but I feel it was appropriate for this dish. It wasn’t what I was expecting for a place with such high accolades. More like Korean Kalbi with Szechuan spice. Just a suggestion, maybe work on the presentation and add some coconut sugar to the marinade to balance out the flavor of the dish. It was served with an apple slaw that was also, nice, as it was the tangy acidic element to the dish. As the meat was spicy and the slaw tangy I was left yearning for that great balance of flavor great asian food has—spicy, sweet, tangy all in one bite.

I also had the lotus dumpling and that was delightful— maybe the same critique, just missing one thing, but I can’t put my finger on it yet.

The food was good and would definitely go back if I could find a nice date (almost impossible nowadays unless you pay upfront). Service was excellent and the ambiance made you feel warm and welcome. You should try this spot and order a lot more than I did to get a true experience of what this place has to offer.
