We raised this politely with the waitress, who was pleasant, however when the manager came over the interaction was dismissive and unnecessarily rude. There was no genuine attempt to resolve the issue, which made the experience even more disappointing.
Given the cost of the meal, we expected both quality food and professional service. Sadly, we received neither on this occasion.
Overall I gave 3 stars due to the very poor atmosphere, luke warm fries and disappointing desserts and overlooked items. The price point is very expensive at $200 per head and should have been top notch and it wasn’t.
Love how they design the space and outdoor areas.
We just had some nibbles and they were all delicious! A great selection of wine.
Service can be improved I feel as we were sitting outside and sometimes we felt a bit forgotten.
Anyways, will definitely come back and try more food and wine.
A gorgeous Friday afternoon lunch venue and very popular for ladies who lunch from sizing up the patron bookings
Larger groups and a few smaller tables. Just under a handful of he/him
Lunch was an in/out planned occasion instead it became extended resulting from such an enjoyable dining experience
Oysters with a glass of Picpoul de Pinet Champagne a must to start with (min order 3) so let’s have a 1/2 dozen to share please
Sharing all our dishes next the elegant beetroot pink Salmon with a light fresh mouthfill and a glass of Ferrages Rose each
Duck liverpate so perfect with the cornichon finish – I always have to order more crouton and this was presented with a big understanding smile and haste
When in France one must Escargot! The 6 entree snails Bourgogne smelt divine at our table and disappeared way too quickly. Next time I am not sharing.
A main size Classic French steak tartare with pommes serving size was surprisingly large and pouring our own egg a fancy novelty. I had a bottle of mineral water (driving) and my guest returned to a glass of Madame Dumont
Our beautiful French waitress was polished and polite. We admired her services and her personalised uniform.
The manager on top of everything, bar, service, cashiering, follow up and great sense of timing and humour.
A lovely addition to Glenferrie Rd, I can only imagine all the ladies who lunch events already booked in St Germain.
From the quality of the foie gras, to the delicious crispy pork belly, French-style, the perfectly seasoned béarnaise sauce accompanying a great steak to the perfect home-made pastry of the Tarte Tatin…crispy, melting in your mouth, perfect balance of caramel sweetness and tartiness of apples….Nice to be back in France for an hour. Pleasant and caring service from the South of France.
An address to keep- St Germain Wine Bar- 838 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn.
Bravo to the entire team!
The bad:
Service was not good, taking us about half an hour to get menus and order. Sitting outside did not help, but despite our best efforts to flagging down staff, it appeared as if only one staff member was taking orders for the entire establishment. The food also took quite a long time to come, with us being served our mains over 1 hour and 15 mins after arriving.
The food was problematic. The lamb was so rare that, while not unsafe to eat, was not nice given how gummy the texture was. The scotch fillet was cut so uneven that the thin spinalis was completely overcooked (well done) and the thick side of the eye was very rare. The steak was ordered as a medium.
The feedback was provided to the restaurantuer, who offered to re-bake the lamb. However, it was so late in the night that we instead chose to leave. While we appreciate the offer, at $100/head these things are not expected to occur.
The good:
The establishment is very pretty with a vibrant atmosphere. The wine list is good with lots of options.
Overall, we would return for a drink, but not for food.
