I chose an Ethiopian pour over but unfortunately the whiskey barrel notes overpower the naturals. Seems like coffee is roasted onsite in the same room and inevitably will carry the whiskey notes across all roast eventually.
Not all baristas follow proper protocols, except for one I watched while making a flat white, others rushed the process and failed to clean the stem wand immediately (sorry, this is a big no-no for me). Pour over technique is poor, my coffee was handled by two baristas so wasn’t sure what the rhyme or reason was, but fully aware that pour overs are hard to manage in a coffee shop. However, that earns a “waypoint” in my book :).
I’ve liked it better since they remodeled and expanded their building as it made room for more comfortable seating.
The one thing about Barrel House though is that the drinks are never consistent. One day your coffee may be saturated with flavor and the next day your drink may mostly be milk. This is probably because they have so many employees.
What makes Barrel House unique is their Barrel aged drinks. Given the name, they age beans in barrels that once contained bourbon. If you don’t like the taste of bourbon though you can always order a drink with regular beans and not barrel aged beans.
Today I got an iced hot chocolate and my mom got a non-barrel aged iced snowflake latte from their limited edition holiday drinks list.
– Milk-to-Espresso Latte Ratio: 16 oz 2 shots or 20 oz 3 shots
– Syrups: not made in-house, with a few exceptions (coconut, banana, maple)
– Espresso: I tried the barrel-aged so I can’t speak for their regular espresso, but it is not for me. The burnt bourbony flavor overpowers the cup, and yet the espresso still tastes weak. Even if the coffee I order is subpar I still try to finish it, but this one had to go in the trash.
– Service: The website encouraged me to ask the barista about their barrel-aged process, so I did, among other questions that I always ask before ordering a coffee. The woman taking my order seemed annoyed with me and I did not feel welcomed.
The atmosphere was cute and I appreciate the unique approach they take to roasting their coffee in-house. The barrel-aged coffee was a huge miss for me personally. If you’re wondering whether or not to stop here I would advise you to mosey on, but see for yourself! Maybe it will be better for you 🙂
I got the Cinderella latte and it was very good, you can really taste the aged flavor for sure. Chipper and cordial staff. I’d come back for sure.
October 4, 2024 Ashley and I went to Barrel House Coffee for Fall in a Cup Latte and a Honey Oatmilk Matcha for a morning pick me up! The town was decorated with scare crows for every business!
