Malaysian food in the Tri-State area is rarer than a sixth-floor apartment that’s not a walk-up, so I really wanted to like Mamak. It has ample parking and tons of seating–but sadly, the food was uneven at best.

We got:

– Roti Telur: This was decent but could’ve had more green chilies. Despite dining with a Malaysian, I think we were served the roti at Western spicy levels.

– Mamak Udang Mee Noodle Soup: Not bad. Could’ve used more shrimp, but there’s never enough shrimp in these things.

– Nasi Lemak: Bland. Greasy. Sigh-inducing.

– Tofu Nyonya with Vegetable: Deep-fried bean curd chunks stir-fried with vegetables and red peppers. The menu said there’d be basil, but there was no basil. It was also way too salty.

– Mamak Style Fried Rice: The menu said this was coconut rice, but I didn’t taste anything nutty. Appreciated the shrimp and veggies, but it wasn’t the least bit spicy….and the menu said there’d be spiciness! Le sigh.

Service was fine, but it definitely goes over better if you can speak Cantonese. Sadly, we were told there are no actual Malaysians on staff anymore.

As my wallet can’t handle multiple trips to Malaysia every time I crave nasi goreng, I think I’m going to have to keep bridge-and-tunneling to find a suitable version Stateside.

Mamak House was a great surprise. The char kway teow has the strongest wok hei I’ve tasted in New Jersey — smoky, flavorful, and cooked hot. The seafood was fresh, especially the shrimp.

The fried chicken wings were thin, crispy, and had that old-school Chinese style I really like.

The salted fish eggplant claypot is bold and salty, with big chunks of salted fish. Alone they’re strong, but mixed with the eggplant and sauce, the flavor comes together really well.

Overall, strong flavors, fresh ingredients, and excellent wok hei. I’d come back just for the char kway teow.

7/10 Roti Canai
3/10 Pi Pa Duck

Roti Canai was great but the curry that came with it was room temperature, im not sure if thats normally how it comes. The Pi Pa Duck was not it for me. The duck tasted metallic, ozonic, and slightly bloody, so after 3 bites i didn’t finish it. The duck wasn’t cleaned well so there was still hair on it. I can normally ignore a couple of feathers left but it was a noticeable cluster of it. Staff was great and attentive!

This restaurant is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever booked at for a large party. They were very accommodating and pleasant. All of my guest were extremely happy with the service and the food was amazing. The waiters didn’t even show any type of dissatisfaction even knowing that the restaurant is about to close, they didn’t rush us and we enjoyed the whole night.

Came here on Mother’s Day with my mom and the food was delicious! The service was incredible fast — it only took 25 minutes from the moment we sat down and ordered to get our food. All the dishes we ordered are captioned in the photos. It’s also very affordable! We ended up ordering more food to-go Would love to eat here again!

Absolute gem in nj…there are not many Malaysian restaurants in the area. This place is SO underrated and deserves its flowers. The golden spare ribs are so perfectly marinated, and then fried super crispy, yet the meat stays extremely tender 10/10. The coconut jumbo shrimp is AMAZING, it comes topped with these coconut butter flakes that adds amazing texture and flavor to a basic white rice. The Thai basil noodles were aromatic and delicious as well, with good quality tender beef.

Nice spot for some authentic Malaysian cuisine. We tried the pi pa duck, curry beef rendang w rice, curry puffs, roti canai & mango w sticky rice. The best dishes were the duck and the dessert. I was looking forward to trying the rendang and curry puffs. Unfortunately, the curry puffs were more like over fried empanadas than the flaky curry puffs I’ve had in Malaysia. And though the beef rendang had great flavor, most of the meat pieces were mostly fat and hard to chew. The restaurant itself is a big clean space and the service was great. I would come back to try some other dishes.

We come here often and we love the food, service, and ambiance. We ordered coconut shrimp, noodles, fish, and eggplant. The coconut shrimp was totally the winner, and we all loved it. Our server, Raymond, was friendly and checked on us a couple of times if we needed anything. It is a casual spot for dining, but the restaurant is pretty big to have a good capacity of people. I definitely recommend the restaurant for a good dining experience.

Overall, the experience was decent. The food was average, and the service at the beginning was quite pleasant. Compared to a Malaysian restaurant I’ve been to in Edison, the service here is actually better, although the food—especially the Hainanese chicken—might be slightly better in Edison. So in my opinion, both places have their own strengths.

The two male servers here were professional and friendly. However, the checkout experience was really disappointing. A female server came to handle the bill. We were told that there was a discount for paying in cash, so we decided to pay that way. She immediately asked how much tip we were giving, and before we could even review the bill properly, she took the money. When I tried to ask for more clarity, she simply said, “You’ll get the discount anyway,” and then pressed again, “How much tip?” I felt her attitude was quite pushy and uncomfortable. I ended up saying, “18%, “

Then we waited a long time to get our change back, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. A male server later explained they needed to verify the cash was real, which I can understand—but the wait was still quite long. When we finally got the change, it was short by over a dollar. I wasn’t really bothered by the amount, but the whole process felt rushed and dismissive. That female server in particular made the experience feel unpleasant.

What could’ve been a fairly positive overall experience ended on a frustrating note because of this.
