The chicken is almost famous like the website states. It’s GREAT. Anyone who can get a piece of chicken juicy on inside and crunchy on outside should be awarded.
We gave the diner a 4 star because every diner needs chili on the menu. And they don’t have this. We also didn’t like the Mac and Cheese. Too dry and not creamy enough. Shakes and malts too runny. Needs to be thicker. Of course this is all personal opinion. You may like M and C dry and crunchy top. And runny shakes.
The atmosphere and service was good. Still worth the visit.

Tender, juicy, and crispy chicken! It’s a tricky feat to pull off, but the crew at Honey Butter is doing it right. I have really come to really enjoy the Chicken Fried Chicken. Great portion & great flavor! Coming from someone who has grown up locally, it’s nice to see the diner come back to life!

This place exceeded our expectations. Portion sizes were great. The fried chicken was amazing. Friendly staff. And the cutest diner. Really wanted to try a milkshake but was way too full. Next time!

Since I was young there has always been a diner here, shining bright like a stainless steel sentinel watching over the entrance to Carbondale. The hipster aioli bistro revolution hit this town quite early, yet the Diner endured; still championing the working folk with its simple menu and affordable prices. When it finally folded, Honey Butter rose from the ashes of its exhausted culinary traditions to take its place. They have bridged the gap artfully and deliciously between classic diner culture and the chic farm-to-table eateries that rule the land.

It is still very much a 50’s diner both inside and out, just hyper-stylized to its current theme. The entire vibe is spot on, from the tongue-in-cheek decor to the revamped chicken-centric menu. Most all of your favorite diner staples still make an appearance, they are just prepared with more of a practiced hand than you may be used to for this type of establishment. Hashbrowns are actually cooked all the way through, the gigantic biscuits are never dry and actually homemade (never skip out on the honey butter!), and the chicken fried anything is superior to most anything you’ll find in the classic big city grease pits.

What makes Honey Butter truly special however, is that they’re never content on just roosting upon their retro motif. A forward-thinking eye always looks to shake up its foundation. Surprising deviations from the comfort food staples can always be found, including some knockout-worthy Mexican specials from the talented cooking team. Bingo nights, theme parties, and even culinary award worthy multi-course pairing dinners make an appearance here. They’re having a lot of fun slinging delicious no-nonsense homestyle grub, and you’ll have a lot of fun eating it.

Few places in town offer food portions this big at such reasonable prices, and it will all be served to you efficiently by kind and genuine people. You can even get yourself an avocado toast or a fresh fruit bowl if you have the mind, and their focus leans heavily on keeping ingredients as local as possible.

With all of these factors at play, a major argument can actually be made that within Honey Butter’s hallowed halls lie the true essence and soul of Carbondale itself. Blasphemy to some perhaps, but before shouting blasphemer please salivate over a honey-dipped chicken fried chicken breakfast plate first.

Deep fried chicken galore! If you’re looking for tasty fried food, this is the place. We had the burger and chicken/waffles… a first for me and it was really good. The taste profiles of spicy and sweet kept me wanting more. Great atmosphere for the family too since it’s an old, funky diner.

Amazing multilingual staff and authentic delicious Mexican and diner food. Tried their smothered breakfast burrito and an Irish coffee with whisky and Irish creme. Would go again! Try their Mac and Cheese!

Decent diversity of menu options ranging from classic fried chicken to delicious chicken sandwiches. We had the chicken fried chicken with crispy brussels and opinion along with Bonedale Birdie that included waffle fries. The spicy honey is phenomenal and really cool environment!

Spotting dusty work trucks lining the lot, I knew this was the place. And as I backed in to park, another well-used truck arrived. Honey Butter is known for its fried chicken, said the helpful host, as towering as Big Mac. Minutes later I had a towering plate, two piece white, with Cole slaw and onion rings on the side. They brine chicken on the bone with spices, salt, herb bundles, in the hopes each juicy bite has the flavor of chicken soup. Mission accomplished. I ordered sangria with fresh strawberries but most settle on inventive shakes and are rewarded with the frosted extra left alongside their beverage. For kiddos celebrating birthdays, there’s a shake with bubblegum, cake frosting and a pinwheel lollypop straight out of Willy Wonka’s candy factory. If it isn’t clear when your plate arrives, the default is generous Midwest-sized portions. That’s underscored by the ginormous cookies and brownies at the register. Here’s a tip if you visit: Pay in cash to receive a 4 percent discount.
