at a well know restaurant. After having trouble with not being served, we
decided to find another place to eat. We decided we were both in the mood
for BBQ and remembered passing a billboard that advertised Black Bear
Smokehouse. We found it & thoroughly loved it.
Might not have been the usual place we would have chosen for our
anniversary, but we’re sure glad we did! The pork & brisket were awesome-
tender, moist & so flavorful. Their BBQ Sauce Bar gave us choices to pick
our favorite taste & there were plenty of choices.
So glad we found such a friendly & wonderful place to eat. The only downside
is, we don’t have one in Orlando!
As their advertising says …they’re not just cooking food but making
memories. Our thanks for a memorial afternoon that we thoroughly enjoyed!!
**They only cook so much food for the day (good! Fresh BBQ is the best) – so if you have a craving, get there early before they sell out!**
Con: the bathrooms are never clean.
the owner and his special recipe handed down. We had just passed on our home re-fi
and I thought this was a perfect time to do a test run to celebrate.
We got there around 7:30 PM. I wanted a plate of meat. Ordering is done at the
counter where they take your order, you pay for it and give you a number to put on
your seat-yourself table. I tried to order the mix n’ match pick three for $16.95.
I wanted the pulled pork, brisket and ribs. But, alas, they had already sold out
of the ribs. The server stated that they always run out by this time. I thought to
myself they needed to do better planning. 7:30 PM on a Thursday night is not roll
up the sidewalks time.
My SO ordered just the brisket. She had some trouble with a sore TMJ and she
needed a tender meat. Choosing the brisket was not a good idea. The meat was tough
and rather fatty. The taste was good and the smokiness was good, but I had trouble
cutting it with the plastic knife. I tried just pulling it apart and that was
worse. It could have used a few more hours in the oven. On a scale of 10, I’d give
it a 5.
The pulled pork, on the other hand was delicious. It was tender and flavorful.
Just the right amount of lean to fat ration and the fat was not gristly like the
brisket. I’d give it a 9 out of 10. The sides I ordered were french fries and
collard greens. They were OK. A litle pepper sauce (on the table) worked great
with the greens. My SO had fries and the macaroni . She like the mac and cheese
and the fries too.
A note about the sauces. They had 15 different sauces. Number 15, the Kentucky sauces seem to be at all the tables. It was sweet and just a little heat. I liked it the best. They have all the other sauces at a center island where you put it into little cups. The problem is that when you get back to the table, you can’t remember which sauce was which. They need to have a marker pen at the island so you can mark the number on the container.
Overall, we were disappointed. It was an OK experience, but it did not meet our
expectations. We’ll give it another chance and try for the ribs, but I think the
Black Bear Smokehouse needs some tweaking with the cooking process.
They have awesome Desserts and some of the best Sweet Tea in town.
When you need BBQ, think of Black Bear Smokehouse ~ Their awesome!
My wife, myself and a friend visited the new location in Ocala we were greeted by a gentleman that welcomed us to Black Bear Smokehouse restaurant. Right off the bat he started flirting with our friend and asked permission to flirt with my wife. He then proceeded his poor attempt of trying to guess what type of perfume she was wearing. Not a good start!
We were told to wait in one of two lines and our order would be taken at the counter. Both lines were in the area where you would go up and choose your BBQ sauce. After the food was delivered, you couldn’t get to the BBQ sauces due to the large amount of customers standing in line to place their orders. We ordered BBQ sandwiches, 2 sides and drinks. The BBQ was dry, over cooked and too smokey.
