Osteria La Civetta is a celebration of Italian food, wine and hospitality, combined with fresh and local ingredients. The inspiration for La Civetta (The Little Owl) comes from our own life experiences at the tables of family, friends and Osterie of Emilia Romagna. With its Capital, Bologna, the Region is the birthplace of some of the most celebrated ingredients of Italian cuisine worldwide, such as Prosciutto, Mortadella, Aceto Balsamico and Parmigiano Reggiano.

Our winter visit to Osteria La Civetta, in Falmouth MA was such a nice experience. I imagine it is completely different from its summer personality!
The atmosphere is where this place immediately shines—it is incredibly quaint, cozy, and cool. Our dimly lit table was surrounded by dark wood shelving stocked with endless wine bottles, antique copper pots, and a massive, classic red meat slicer, all illuminated by dozens of flickering candles. It’s the perfect rustic retreat for a cold evening.
We kicked things off with Lemon Drops and the Tagliere ($26), which was a massive and generous platter. Beautifully presented on a rustic board, it featured a rich assortment of meats, multiple large wedges of cheese, pickled vegetables like cauliflower and carrots, walnuts, and a central dish of honey with a wooden dipper. It was a feast, and we thought it would be the perfect, satisfying board to share with just a few great glasses of wine and no other main course.

Overall, the main pasta dishes were a little mixed for us, though still fine. The Carbonara ($28) was the absolute standout, perfectly smoky, rich, and creamy with substantial chunks of pancetta. On the other hand, we were slightly disappointed by the Tagliatelle Bolognese ($28). While the house-made pasta itself was wonderful, the meat sauce clung very tightly to it and felt quite dry, and we both really wished there were just more ‘sauce’ on the plate.

We finished the night sharing the Tiramisu ($16). The texture was beautifully creamy, but sadly, it just lacked the bold flavor profile—that real, distinctive espresso and cocoa punch—we look for in this dessert.

Despite a few minor critiques, it was a very memorable and nice experience. We’re planning to return and try it one more time in the summer to see how the menu and the whole vibe shifts!

I have been trying to get here for the $29 weekend special lasagna for over a year. Came in on Saturday in between lunch and dinner- we were the only people in the place. My kid loved their pasta dish! I unfortunately was served Luke warm/cold lasagna. When I told the waitress she did offer to reheat it but I didn’t see the point. The damage was done. The year long wait was ended and ruined….again we were the only people in the place!! I did eat 1/2 of it, did not want to take it home, they did take it off the bill for me. I don’t see a need to return.

Update 2024: excited to come back this summer again and it was delicious!
Last year the olives in the salad were the same castlevetrano and this year they were not which was disappointing.
I was also able to switch pasta for the pomodoro dish as I get sick of only spaghetti. The rigatoni was delish!
My partner was so looking forward to their basil pesto dish again but unfortunately they switched it to a sun dried tomato pesto, which was delicious and creamy, but not as good as the basil pesto. Another couple nearby also said they were disappointed the basil pesto was not available as well. Please bring back!
Also, please put some gliders on the outdoor chairs as the scraping across the stone floor on the patio was so annoying; the noise is overwhelming when it’s full of people out there.
Oh and the affogato dessert was delish! Definitely get that – the espresso was so yummy!!

2023: Wonderful place and atmosphere. They make their own pasta in-house! Yay. I definitely only love to eat homemade fresh pasta, if feels better in my system and this place was delish. Their pesto was yummy as well. Oh and the olives they have are my favorite olives (just a funny coincidence). The only thing was that I thought the bread and olive oil was on the cheap side. Not the best in comparison to everything else. Sadly.
The Rosso di Toscana wine was absolutely lovely! Get a glass!
Sitting outside was very nice but a little warm. Wish they had some oscillating fans above to help move sit around in the summer.
Our server was wonderful as well.
Very lovely. Can’t wait to go again next summer.

We had two couples and have always enjoyed this restaurant and wanted to show it to our guests. Our waiter was incredibly rude not only to us but her fellow workers. We felt almost ignored by her and asked another young lady to take our drink order. After she took it she gave it to the other waiter. She came back to our table and told us she was our waiter and made us reorder our drinks. She was hard to locate at times and others had to bring butter, etc.. our guests the following day couldn’t believe how rude she was and I totally agree. The food that night was also off. We live year round in Falmouth and will not be back. Something has changed here and it’s not for the good.

Lovely restaurant in downtown Falmouth. Tried the buratta and the bolognese. And finished with an interesting dessert special. The bolognese was tasty but could have used a larger portion. Great serf

Osteria La civetta is such a gem! I have been four times and the food is always amazing! The ambiance is romantic and quaint. We went last night on the Fourth of July and were able to sit on their patio, which is beautiful. Last night I got their ricca salad, which was delicious. I also really enjoy their homemade pasta, which I got the night before. They had a special that came with lobster meat. Their wine selection is great. They have a wine from Puglia that I really enjoy. If I get dessert, I usually order the affogato. Last night, they brought my husband and I limoncello at the end of our meal. I highly recommend dining here if you’re looking for an amazing Italian meal.

Great espresso. Direct from Italy. Can’t get this taste of espresso anywhere.

Have it in their Cremino drink with whip cream and chocolate. Heaven!

The staff is superb.
