Whats with the picture of an Arby’s bag and the two wrappers from Arby’s sandwiches purchased at the Arby’s on Route 4 in Chatham, IL??
Read on for the answer.
I was headed back to Springfield from a couple hours of fishing with my good friend in his boat on Otter Lake. It was just a tad past 9 PM and as I was approaching Chatham, I remembered I had a coupon for BOGO at Arby’s as part of their APPs specials for the weekend, and I could have one for my supper (as I had given one of my McDonald’s “Golden” chicken wraps to my fishing host earlier) since I was still hungry.
Well, the APP strikes again. While not as terrible as WalMarts APP, it certainly has its own issues. Like on the same page it states that the Arby’s in Chatham was now closed, AND on that same page, it clearly states the store was open till 10 PM!!
Aye Carumba!
Anyway, I decided to share my dilemma with the store as I’m already there, and as I drive around the building I spot an employee, who happens to be a managers there, and show her my APP. She is aware of the issue and offered to honor the deal.
Now that’s how companies and supervisory staff “should” act but all to seldom do. I pulled up to the window and ordered exactly what I was going to via the “Arby’s APP” and they honored the deal!
I ordered a French Dip Roast Beef and Swiss and their new sandwich, the Loaded Itallian. I was only going to eat the Dip, and maybe take a bite of the Itallian (that sounds so wrong) BUT unfortunately (or fortunately) after I took the one bite, I couldn’t help myself, and finished the entire Itallian – it was that good!
I can’t say much about the Dip as its oh, so.good in its own right, that one expects that. But that Loaded Itallian (with everything BUT NO ONIONS on it) was memorable.
And why the pictures of an empty bag and two empty sandwich wrappers? Simple. I couldn’t put the sandwiches down long enough to take their picture, they were so darn good!!!
The staff greeted me with a warmth so immediate and sincere it felt rehearsed, like actors preparing for a play whose audience never arrives. Their smiles were just a fraction too wide, their politeness almost operatic. I half-expected someone to lean in and ask if I was finally here to awaken the others. Still, they handed me my roast beef sandwich with ritualistic reverence, as if bestowing a relic.
No music played. No fryer beeped. No other customer entered. I ate in silence, the ice machine buzzing like distant insects, every bite echoing in the hollow chamber of this meat cathedral. Outside, cars streamed past on the highway, but none turned in. None ever turn in. This place stands as a monument to mystery, a beef-scented Bermuda Triangle where diners vanish or perhaps are simply never permitted to exist in the first place.
And yet, the sandwich was good. Hauntingly good. Suspiciously good. As though in the absence of other patrons, all of reality’s remaining flavor was concentrated into this single meal.
Five stars? No. That would imply understanding.
Three stars: one for the meat, one for the curly fries, and one for the unsettling possibility that I was the only real person in that building.
I will return.
Not because I want to.
But because I must know.
Today was nice. Even though they got a small detail wrong. They did pretty good! Wish i wasnt scared so bad from the first time. Next time I think I’ll have the bacon sandwich before it’s gone.
