My husband and I came here for the first time in August after hearing so many good things about this place. We just moved to Houston a few months ago, and since my husband is from the Isan region, we were very excited to try it. We saw a lot of people online saying the food here tastes really authentic, so we had to check it out.
The restaurant is small but cozy, and when we came for Sunday lunch, it was almost full. That made me even more excited to try the food. Luckily, there was no wait at all.
My husband tried to order in his language, but the staff did not understand, and that was when we realized this restaurant is fully Thai, not Isan. Even though they did not have real Isan dishes, the service was very nice. The waitress was patient and careful with our order, especially since we had a few special requests, and everything came out exactly right.
Here is what we ordered:
Lao Sausage (Sai Gok): Served with sticky rice and a spicy tomato dipping sauce. The sausage was juicy and a good size, but I wish it had a little more spicy.
Crispy Chicken Skin: This was the best dish for both of us. Super crispy, flavorful, and it even came with sticky rice and dipping sauce. My husband said this was his number one favorite.
Nam Tok Neua (Grilled Beef Salad): This dish was okay, but for our taste, it was not as spicy or sour as we like. Still good, just a bit mild.
Papaya Salad (Thum Mak Hoong): We ordered the Isan version, and it came out really delicious. It was not the best we have ever had, but still better than most places we have tried.
Tom Yum Soup: Very flavorful, spicy, and served in a generous portion. We both enjoyed this one a lot.
We ordered everything at the Thai Hot level, which is the highest spice level, and everything came out exactly how we wanted. If you cannot handle spice very well, I recommend starting with level one.
Overall, we had a great experience. The food was tasty, the service was friendly, and we left full and happy. It may not taste exactly like true Isan food, but the flavor is still close and really good. Definitely recommend trying this place if you are in Houston.
Thai Ice Tea
Definitely on the sweeter side compared to most of the thai teas that I’ve had at other restaurants
Lao Sausage
I’m usually super picky with anything pork but the seasonings and spices were fantastic! And with the sauce and sticky rice, this is definitely an appetizer worth getting
Tum Poo Khem (papaya salad with salted crab)
If you’re getting this dish, make sure you really enjoy fishy flavors because I had a hard time finishing my serving. The salted crab was yummy but the sauce they used for the salad was too strong for me.
Thai Boat Noodles
I love how this gives you an option to choose either light/dark soup and thin/thick noodles. My bf got the dark and thick noodles. The soup was good, the meat was okay, but the noodles were meh
Tom Yum Noodles
The soup is definitely on the sweeter side which I enjoy but again, it’s personal preference bc my bf favors the broth to be more sour. The chicken and shrimp were good and the noodles were standard.
Mango Sticky Rice
This was unfortunately a let down. The mango was not ripe and it was on the hard side. The sticky rice’s flavoring was good but the texture was just okay.
Overall, there were some hits/misses but I would love to go back and try their other dishes.
I’ve tried the Somtum Thai, Ko Lard, and the Thai boat noodles (with thick noodles in a dark, flavorful broth). Everything has been amazing. This is actually my third time back, and honestly, this place has the best Som Tum I’ve had so far. (Trust me, I’ve tried several Thai restaurants around River Oaks, TMC, downtown Houston, they were good, but this place is way better and so much more authentic!)
I came again today, Sunday, but this time with the family. The food is still really good, however this time it was really really crowded (which makes me happy since it’s good, genuine Laotian food). There was lots of takeout and lots of people dining in. I think they probably could have added one more person since it was so busy the service was lacking – drink never got refilled, which is okay since we all ordered water. The food took longer to come out but it was well worth the wait. I definitely probably won’t come here during the weekends since it just very busy and the restaurant is very small.
Overall, so far, I think this is the best Laotian food I have had here in Houston. The menu is small but what they have is very good. Once the summer gets warmer, I will probably try their salads. Definitely will recommend this restaurant if you are looking for something different.
