Overall: it was decent, but I don’t have a desire to go again.
The Organic Smith Tea selection was really great! Lots of herbal and caffeinated tea options. I did not have a cocktail so I can’t speak to that aspect.
The tartlet with smoked salmon mousse, crème fraîche, caviar, and dill was very tasty. The crostini with whipped goat cheese, kumquat preserve, and sorrel had a really great combo of flavors. The Pain D’épices hit middle of the road for me- interesting flavor profile (foie gras ganache, cocoa nibs and thyme) but didn’t blow me away.
The aspects that were disappointing were the Coronation chicken salad sandwich with Madras curry- The bread was so dry and just seemed stale. It wasn’t soft and fresh like a nice little tea sandwich usually is. There was also nothing holding the chicken salad mixture to the bread.
The scones and the red velvet cake all seemed like they pulled them out of a box. Or the scones out of a frozen ready-to-bake situation. The scones were not warm or flaky. They were dense and room temperature.
However, to round out this feedback- Two of the three desserts that were really great, were the chocolate mousse cup, and the chocolate Heath cookie. The salt on top of the cookie was fantastic!
So again, overall decent experience. There were some great aspects… but my friends and I all agreed that we would have paid maybe $30-40 for this tea than $50 plus the pre-applied tip. I do think they could level it up by making scones from scratch in-house (OR, if the scones were in fact made from scratch in-house, I would highly recommend using a different recipe or method).
I will try them again for their regular menu and see what that experience is like.
I want to start off by saying the positives:
We were celebrating our ten year anniversary and they gave us a complimentary glass of champagne, and the table had a great view of the kitchen upstairs. It was warm and inviting. Out server Q was incredible, knowledgeable and attentive.
I came here last year with my girlfriends and had the lasagne, and it was dreamy. So I decided to order it again. It lacked béchamel so intensely this time. I had to drink water between each sip because of how dry it was. They did comp this, which was nice. But I was so looking forward to having that melt in your mouth bite again.
My husband ordered the $160 cut of beef of the day. A bone in ribeye, medium rare.
It lacked salt, had absolutely no crust (which is insane considering the kitchen set up we were staring at. And was cut awfully. It seemed like a really prime piece of meat, just cooked so awful we couldn’t stomach it. A lot of well done pieces, almost like the steak was not paid attention to during the cooking process. The bread was also pretty burnt and rock hard, not like a traditional milk bread should be.
The ice cream at the end was phenomenal.
I’d say overall, if you’re going to go here – don’t go on a Friday night when they’re busy. They seemed overwhelmed and it doesn’t operate as smoothly. I’d say try it out for an earlier week night dinner and your food will most likely have more flavor and be constructed with less rush.
Missy, the events coordinator, was incredible! She was organized, responsive, and genuinely invested in making our day run smoothly. She helped with everything from logistics and timeline management to setup and food and drink coordination. We and our families were able to fully enjoy the day without stress.
Our guests repeatedly commented on how beautiful the space was and how seamless the event felt. We felt completely supported from planning through the end of the night. We would highly recommend The Lively to any couple looking for a stunning venue with exceptional staff.
