3.2⭐️. Stopped for the night in Clayton NM. Tried this Mex/American food spot. Inside is a little rough. Only one lady working, cooking, taking orders, answering phone etc. So it doesn’t seem like she has much time to clean and wipe tables. Tables had wads of napkins under them to balance them on a tile floor missing tiles. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger w/fries and the taco plate, all carne asada. The taco plate is three tacos w/rice and beans.

The food was decent. Pretty messy, but good flavor. There was no bacon on our burger. We cut it in half to share. Lots of mayo and mustard. Pickles, lettuce chunks and onions. The patty was thick and juicy with a fat cheese slice melted on it.

The tacos came in a lightly crisped pair of corn tortillas. A healthy portion of carne asada, onions and cilantro. There was a chips and salsa bar, I didn’t take pics of that as there are plenty already in other reviews. The selection looked like some of them could’ve been pretty hot.

Glad we got there when we did as it got busy real quick and we saw two walkouts who got tired of waiting to place an order. Gal could use some help. There was a selection of soft drinks, and bottled water. It pretty much met the expectations we had for it.

It was survivable – the food didn’t kill us. The pork was disgusting, big pieces of skin with hair. Red stuff was okish. Beef was edible. Will not do again.

Everything’s fresh and fabulous!
Very crunchy fries, freshly fried in clean canola oil.
Women might not want to come alone at night, though. Not the safest enviornment.

This place has amazing food. Based on the looks of the place, I imagine most people will just drive by. That’s a mistake. On my visit, there were a few other people inside and fairly consistent pick up orders. Service was quick and friendly both times I ordered. I ate a taco and burrito and they were so good, I ordered more to go. Multiple options for salsa. The building is older so it may look inadequate to some but I’d say it was as clean as possible and I had no issues. I was in the restaurant business for decades so I tend to look around and nothing looked ‘unkept’. If I’m ever in this part of New Mexico again, this will be on my list to revisit. If you pass without stopping in, you’re missing out!

I grew up in a town like Clayton, where getting our first stoplight was a noteworthy indication increasing traffic. Because our road trip took us through this town, we needed a place to eat, and all five of us were thrilled with the results here.

Aesthetically, it looks like this building may be a repurposed fast food restaurant built in the ’70s or ’80s and ready for significant renovations to repair and upgrade the exterior, floors, and bathroom. The food preparation reminded me more of a family food truck than a restaurant or diner. But if that doesn’t bother you, this is a great place for Mexican dishes and respite from the road.

My wife thought the red sauce was too sweet and the ground beef a little bland. Like the interior, it may not be for everyone, but I loved everything we ordered. I especially appreciated the extra amount of cheese used in the dishes. Finally, although I am a huge fan of Mexican restaurants (and Tex-Mex, Cali-Mex, etc.), I tend to have taste or texture problems with many salsas. This is the first time ever that I enjoyed every salsa variant available, so I didn’t choose and just went with them all!

My wife and I stopped by for dinner an evening in JUN 2025 while passing through Clayton.
There were only 7-8 other customers in the restaurant.
One of the cooks also took our food order.
The food is not really cheap here – and too expensive when compared to what you get and how it tastes.
It took about 25 minutes for the food to be served.
The Taco salad was VERY basic and really flavour less.
The chili rellenos were ok – but the accompanying beans and rise were lacking flavour also.
The place is quite dirty – tables not wiped clean after previous customers and floor dirty.
Been there – done that. Not repeating.

Stopped by for lunch on our way back to Dallas, upon entering we were not greeted, there was a couple kids running around the whole entire time we were there for our meal. When we asked the guy standing by the register what kind of meats they offered, he had no clue. The other young lady was sweeping and had to ask her mom in the kitchen and it took her a while to even respond. The food was alright, nothing special. One of the meats had a weird taste to it, didn’t think anything of it at first, however my husband also told me the same thing after we left. We had been here 2 years ago and it was great. Not sure why this time everything just felt off, from the kids running around, to the food not tasting right. Will not be back. Makes me sad. I was really looking forward to these tacos.

Really great food! Tacos were great. The atmosphere is great to eat inside, a little bit of flies but other then that, I recommend to stop here to take a small break from driving. Great authentic Mexican restaurant!
