The cool thing about small plates is you kind of order as you go. So you start with a few things, share if you want to, order more if you want, share more if too want and so on. So we started with Edamame and Gyoza. The Edamame was about the same as what I’ve had elsewhere but we both thought the Gyoza was special.
If you’re wondering if it was fried or steamed, my answer is….both? lol. Seriously, it tasted like it was steamed for the most part, then fried a little at the end. Really unique and unlike we’ve had it before. Bursting with flavor too.
Next up was Salmon Crudo, which was ordered mostly for me. My wife isn’t a big seafood fan to begin with but she’s been trying things here and there. The salmon was VERY high quality, melted in your mouth and didn’t taste anything like what she would be used to so I encouraged her to try it. She did and she didn’t dislike it, so that’s a win!
After that, we tried the Karaage which is a fried breaded chicken bite dish. This was a great way to reward my wife for being brave in trying the salmon haha. From the first bite, her eyes lit up and she keep saying “oh my god, yes. That’s the stuff right there”. After I finished the salmon and got the rest of the chicken, I agreed. It was seasoned REALLY well. There was a Japanese mayo on the side that was really good too but I could’ve eaten the chicken with or without it, honestly.
We weren’t done yet because we hadn’t ordered what they’re famous for: their skewers. We tried one from each type, the chicken meatball and the skirt steak with chimichurri. We liked both but I think I liked the streak more than the chicken and she was the opposite. It’s interesting because the steak had a little kick, but I still liked it more.
We WERE going to be done there, I promise. However, I’d posted a photo of my drink (I’ll get back to that in a bit) on Instagram and Kat FromFla replied to say that we needed to try the Crab Fried Rice. I’m not one to argue so……we ordered the Crab Fried Rice lol. We only made it through about a quarter of it though and took the rest home. It was great though. The crab meat added a tiny bit of sweetness that you normally wouldn’t get in fried rice. Thanks for the recommendation, Kat!
So about that drink: I love me some Plum Wine so I ordered a drink they have called Ume Spritz which has a plum wine base. I limited myself to one with dinner but I could’ve gone through 5 or 10 with ease. Great drink.
Needless to say this was a great first visit for us. In addition to the great food, I want to mention that our server was great. She was very sweet and explained stuff that we asked about without making us feel dumb. She said her name was Layda (I’m spelling it like it sounded, though I’m not sure I’m spelling it right), so if you go there and get her for a server you’ll be in good hands.
We got Japanese Curry, Crab fried rice, and the Maguro Shoyu Tataki, along with the momo (chicken thigh), skirt steak, and lamb skewers, which were all excellent.
The katsu was fried wonderfully that paired well with the curry sauce, the crab fried rice had genuine chunks of crab in flavorful soy sauce scallion rice, and while it wasn’t as flavorful/marinated as I thought it would be, the maguro shoyu tataki was still very fresh and prepared nicely.
For the skewers, they all had that iconic grilled flavor and a very mild sauce brushed on it. We were particularly impressed by the lamb, which was still nice and tender.
While the menu is a bit on the pricier side, Izakaya is worth a stop to enjoy tasty dishes in a cutely decorated spot (-:
This is also probably the most expensive sushi place I’ve ever been to. But it was worth it. The dishes you get and the care put into the thick slices of fish and presentation was next level. We tried a lot of different dishes and loved everything.
We’ll be back for a special occasion.
We enjoyed the dining experience at the reopening. great vibe amazing food we tried allot from the menu hamachi kama amazing, black garlic ramen chicken karaage ,the wings were top tier next time I’m coming for the sushi
The menu is not only creative but packed with incredible options every roll and dish we’ve tried has been fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The fish quality is outstanding, easily rivaling the top sushi spots in California.
The vibe is modern, lively, and fun, whether you’re grabbing a casual dinner or making it a special night out. Pro tip: if you’re looking for a booth, make sure you book a reservation because this place fills up fast.
If you’re serious about sushi or just love trying great food in a cool atmosphere, Izakaya Ko is a must-visit. Jacksonville finally has its sushi gem!
Make sure you get the ocean pearl roll! OK there’s never been a sushi bar that I thought had fresh fish. This is absolutely incredible. Look at my photos.
