We ordered avocado bhel, paper dosa with masala on the side, dal tadka, aloo gobi, and a complimentary aloo sabzi. The dal tadka was the most satisfying dish—comforting and well balanced. The aloo gobi and complimentary aloo sabzi were fine but leaned simple; the sabzi in particular seemed to share a similar bhaji-style masala base.
The paper dosa was thicker and shorter than expected, and while the chutneys and sambhar were pleasant, they weren’t especially distinctive. Overall, the textures felt more substantial and rustic rather than light or delicate.
Service was warm but slow, with one person managing multiple tables and the bar. Also – I wish they gave bigger plates, it was hard to eat in tiny plates!
Overall: Tumbi could appeal to diners who are new to Indian food or looking for familiar, approachable flavors—especially those ordering classic dishes like butter chicken or other non-vegetarian options. As a vegetarian diner, this was my experience, and the menu felt more restrained than expected. Not a bad meal—just one where expectations, and ordering choices, matter.
Let’s start with the food: while somewhat flavorful, the quantity was almost laughable for the price. 3 pieces of paneer for $17, a small 12 oz coke for $6, even smaller Mango Lassi for $7 4 small puri of Dani puri for $12, portions were too small period. Straight robbery. I’ve never left an Indian restaurant unfulfilled and unsatisfied, this one is the first. Usually Indian restaurants offer rice with the dish, here you’re left to just eat the dish alone after you finish roti. Charging premium rates is one thing, delivering value is another. I understand rent and overhead are increasing, especially in Santa Monica, but that doesn’t justify cutting corners on portion size, quality, or service.
Service was slow, inattentive, and careless. Orders were taken incorrectly, and it felt like no one really cared to correct the mistakes. When I corrected and ordered what wasn’t delivered, it just added to the wait times. When a restaurant starts prioritizing cost-cutting over customer experience, it shows, and not in a good way.
Running a business in today’s climate is tough, but if the solution is to offer less while charging more, customers won’t stick around for long. There are too many great options out there that understand how to balance quality, service, and value, this just wasn’t one of them.
I tried the Chili Garlic Shrimp and the prawns were so huge, I had to cut them each into 3 pieces to eat. Had a lovely sweet chili flavor with a hint of garlic.
Appetizers: Panipuris were crisp, fresh and the pani was just the right amount of tangy!
The wada pav was soft, crunchy and the idle fries are a stroke of genius.
The avocado bhelpuri are pretty dope! Never knew avocados would go that well with that spice palette.
Main course:
The butter chicken is so good and so rich! We ordered it twice!
The laccha parattha and the garlic naan compliment the dishes really well!
Dessert:
Kulfi: they have malai, pistachio and mango flavors! So smooth, so rich and a good portion size
The deconstructed carrot halwa: probably haven’t had dessert that good in a while. They serve it with ice cream and granola which gels so well with the halwa!
10/10- would come again
