MAMA COCO Cantina in Calera is an absolute treasure! The cultural ambiance is vibrant, and the Coco-themed art brings a warm, family-friendly atmosphere to the restaurant. The service is outstanding—my server was a cool, professional boxer who was both knowledgeable and personable, adding to the overall great experience.
I had the Durango Steak, which was a ribeye cooked to perfection, paired with 5 jumbo shrimp grilled just right. The steak was topped with a delicious fajita butter that took the dish to another level! It came with steamed veggies covered in their famous cheese sauce and a side of authentic Spanish rice. The plating was beautiful—everything was as impressive visually as it was delicious.
My daughter loved her quesadillas, calling them the best she’s ever had. The slow-cooked beans with roasted pork were rich and flavorful. My mom enjoyed the Pollo Loco, which was juicy grilled chicken on a bed of rice and cheese sauce.
The restaurant is laid-back during the week but transforms into a fun karaoke spot on weekends with half-off drinks and great music! I also had a Texas Margarita, made with 5 different liquors—it was amazing, possibly the best margarita I’ve ever had!
If you’re in Calera, don’t miss MAMA COCO Cantina! Five-star authentic Mexican food, incredible service, and a wonderful atmosphere. Me and my family Highly recommend!

The first time I called I got told we were closed early, I wasn’t given a reason as if she did not know or did not want to tell me that yall were closed due to pressure from another. But she told me that, I hung up, waited ten minutes, called back and placed my order.
I ordered the chimichangas with the shredded chicken. I wanted grilled chicken because thats what I’ve liked to get in the past, but couldnt because they were trying to close the restaurant before closing time, (i dont mean preclosing like sweeping up or shutting down only a few pieces of equipment in the back) they had no grills, already put the chemicals on the grill so I had to eat this shredded chicken that had an ungodly amount of salt. Whoever prepared that shredded chicken needs some serious retraining on the recipe. That or somebody sprinkled loads of salt on the shredded chicken that was maybe prepared right by someone else! But the recipe matters, and whoever on your team does not understand a thing about hospitality or doesn’t care about the rulebooks needs to just get replaced. Any self respecting business needs to take a stand against any of their subordinates to coach them in the right direction, retrain them, explain not to use so much salt, or just fire them and find ways to make any future shifts work without them.
I also heard word from the server on the phone the second time that they were in the back deep cleaning, which i commend folks who work hard to give the store an extra scrub to be cleaner, but time and place yall. Find the recipe issue, find the culprit or culprit collective mentality and coach it in the right direction and tell them how its done.

Im not paying extra for something that normally comes on it. And the quality of the food was still terrible. Its not a good look when replying back to reviewers being argumentative. Do better.
But I will mention a few highlights: great food, great service, awesome atmosphere and an overwhelming list of choices on their menu that are all outstanding . A few personal favorites are the Mexican Spaghetti, the Street Tacos, the Grande Burrito and the Mama’s Dip as an appetizer.
As long as Mama Cocos Cantina is still around, I know that great food is just a short drive away (we live in Columbiana). We are huge fans!!!
Great atmosphere. Food had great flavors. Queso was really good. I had the chicken and rice which also came with onion and bell peppers. They did not skimp on the chicken. There was plenty of food. I could have used more rice and less bell peppers but it was still delicious. Will definitely be there again.
