*Food:
1. Karaage Omu-Curry
– Karaage was crispy, juicy, and seasoned very well. Pretty much what Karaage would taste like in Japan. Curry was very traditional, yet modern. Most vegetables that are incorporated into the curry are blended, this giving a smooth consistency. Japanese omelette has a silky and smooth texture, which makes the dish balanced.
– 10/10
2. Katsu Don & Tonjiru
– No explanation necessary. Most identical to Japan. If criticism is needed, dish is a little too sweet.
– Tonjiru reminded me of my elementary school days in Japan. Good flavor, good amount of toppings.
– 10/10
3. Tempura & Udon
– By far the best tempura in Portland. When fried to perfection, the tempura “blossoms” and this restaurant did this to perfection.
– Udon was simple, but broth was deep and flavorful.
– 10/10
4.Salmon Hamachi Sushi Rice Bowl
– 5-6 pieces of Salmon and Hamachi each. Fish is fresh and has an extraordinary texture. No fishy aftertaste. The rice was seasoned to perfection, presented with the right amount of vinegar for al dente textured rice.
– 10/10
5.Aburi Saba (Seared Mackerel)
– Searing on the mackerel was spot on, fishy aftertaste is nowhere to be found, shari was very well balanced. Probably the best Saba in Portland.
– 10/10
6.Aburi Sake (Seared Salmon)
– Seared to perfection. Balanced shari. Has a smoky flavor after torching the fish. Texture is also amazing since it just melts in your mouth.
– 10/10
7.Hamachi (Amberjack/Yellowtail)
– Alike tuna, hamchi could be very fishy. However, blood was completely drained. Color of the fish displays the freshness.
– 10/10

* Atmosphere:
– Overall highly satisfied. For the price of the items, quality and quantity was assured and tasted great. Restaurant was clean and quiet despite the full seating. Again, friendly servers and excellent food quality as well as fast serving time. Portland does not have a proper Japanese restaurant. This changes with Sambi as they serve Tonjiru instead of the simple Miso soup, and their quality Japanese dishes. The restaurant, again reminded me of Japan. I will be recommending this place to anyone who is looking for actual Japanese food, not the usual Korean owned “Japanese” teriyaki chicken restaurants. No explanation further necessary. Best quality sushi and Japanese dishes.
Fish cut was thick enough to feel the texture. Salmon, Tuna, Scallops and others were all super great but Saba and Tamago stood out. Those gave me the strong impression
Omurice curry was great and you can taste caramelized onions in the curry! Katsu was top notch. The portion was big but I finished everything because it was so good!
For dessert, they had homemade Miso Ice cream . If it is available, please try them! Miso flavor is well balanced.
Inside, the interoir is modern and everything was clean and neat. They finished the renovation and opened up again and they started to serve the alcohol! All the food price is reasonable especially thinking about what you get.
I didn’t have drink because it was the daytime but it would be perfect for the date night spot! Highly recommened for everyone. I wish I live close by!
We heard the renovation was complete, so made the trip down, and we were so happy to see everyone and taste the new menu.
I went for Omu Curry with Karaage which was scrumptious, it came with side of Japanese potato salad and shredded cabbage. Karaage was the BEST I’ve ever tasted – so soft and tender with crispy exterior.
Volume was quite generous and I had to get to go box.
My mother had the seafood mix don, which she started eating before I could even take the picture, and she finished her plate with the biggest smile 🙂
My toddler was being rambunctious, running around all over the place, which is why we came in early not to disturb the other guests. Waitress was very patient and kind with her and I appreciate their patience.
This is our favorite place for authentic Japanese cuisine, and we are very eager to return with friends and family.
Each piece of fish/egg was ridiculously PLUMP. The scallop was nice and buttery, albeit not as sweet as the scallop I had at ISHI & Kaori’s. The salmon was smooth and buttery as well, and the egg was succulent and sweet while still tasting like good quality egg. My favorite piece, however, was the squid. It was incredibly thick and chewy while still being buttery and almost melt-in-your-mouth. I have no idea how they did that, but that’s what it was like. The squid flavor absolutely filled my mouth, and there was a certain bite to the slice of squid that made for a textural joyride, but at the same time, I didn’t have to exert too much effort to chew it at all. The flavor almost reminded me of king crab innards, which is one of the most nutty, savory, and umami foods that I have ever tasted. It was wonderful.
One interesting thing about this place is that the don’t have any miso soup, just tonjiru. While I understand that the tonjiru is a heartier, more complete option with more ingredients, I didn’t think it worked very well with the nigiri set. You see, the nigiri set is something that should be enjoyed as it is—no external flavor influences allowed except for wasabi and soy sauce. But unlike miso soup, which has a pretty straightforward flavor profile and has a certain saltiness that helps to boost our appetite without encroaching on the nigiri, the tonjiru was extremely rich, fatty, and greasy. While comforting, it didn’t pair well with the nigiri.
The katsu was thick and properly done, not those super thin, westernized versions lol. Everything tasted really good overall.
If I had one small note, I wish the tonjiru had pork belly and that the ingredients kept a bit more texture. They were a little overcooked and kind of melted away. But still, really good and satisfying!
This place is nothing like the “Japanese-style” restaurants you often find in the U.S.—the flavors, presentation, and attention to detail all reflect genuine Japanese cooking.
Honestly, it’s surprising to find this level of authenticity at around $20. A truly great value and a spot I’m excited to come back to.
Karaage chicken in the bento was super moist with a light fluffy crispy shell
