I had been craving proper Indian food, so when I found Saravanaa Bhavan in Milan I decided to give it a try. The place is vegetarian/vegan, clean and modestly decorated, with a calm, welcoming vibe and friendly staff. It’s part of the well-known South-Indian chain and sits at Via Flavio Baracchini 9, not far from the Duomo.

I ordered a thali, plus a side of chole bhatura, vada, sambar, filter coffee — and a chana dish. To my surprise, the chole bhatura was genuinely delicious: the bhatura was puffed and soft, slightly crisp on the edges, and soaked up the chole nicely (especially impressive for a place that leans south-Indian). The rest of the thali components were solid — the sambar was aromatic, the vada had a good crunch yet stayed tender inside, and the filter coffee at the end was a comforting finish.

That said, there were a few small hiccups: the menu is extensive (lots of South and North Indian options) and some of the staff speak mostly English, which made choosing a bit of a guesswork. Still, the service was reasonably prompt once I placed the order, and the portions felt generous. On the whole, Saravanaa Bhavan in Milan delivered a satisfying experience — especially for someone yearning for Indian flavors — and its unexpected strength in chole bhatura won me over. If you ever feel homesick for Indian food in Milan, this is a place worth going to.

OMG, amazing authentic indian food we enjoyed various north and south indian dishes for three days although they should improve their service as for all the 3 occurrences they never serve the food together to 3 members of my family. It was awkward that 1 person start eating and others are waiting. Even we tried to wait but it took long time and there was no point to wait. They should serve by table instead serving various tables based on whatever preparation is ready.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Review for Saravana Bhavan Milan

Went to Saravana Bhavan Milan today, and we had also visited yesterday. Being New Year, the restaurant was extremely crowded yesterday, yet the food was served quite quickly. Today it was comparatively less crowded, but the service took longer.

That said, on both days the food was very fresh and tasted excellent — absolutely no complaints on food quality. I really appreciate Saravana Bhavan for maintaining the same authentic taste and consistency you get in India, even here in Milan.

In terms of ambience, it honestly feels like a busy South Indian eatery back home — something like Madurai Muniyandi Vilas or the Maattu Thavani food spots. The kitchen door is kept wide open, so you hear the full cooking sounds, metal sounds, along with strong burnt masala aromas spreading throughout the restaurant.

While this adds to the street-food vibe, the smell carries heavily onto clothes and jackets, thermal inner wares, which is not ideal, especially for travellers with flights the next morning. A simple improvement would be to keep the kitchen door closed or improve ventilation, which would greatly enhance the dining experience. When complained to the Chef inside, we heard him saying loudly, if you don’t like smell why coming to our restaurant? Never had this smelling experience in any of the Saravana Bhavan restaurants back in India.

Overall, excellent food and authentic flavours — just a small operational tweak needed to make the experience more comfortable.

Saravanaa Bhavan in Milan was a pleasant surprise for us! As Indians, we were genuinely thrilled to find an authentic South Indian restaurant right in the city.

The service was good, and we tried their meals, filter coffee, and masala dosa — all of which were quite satisfying and true to taste. A special mention to the person at the reception, who was kind enough to help us arrange a taxi back to our hotel.

A great spot if you’re craving a bit of home-style South Indian comfort food while in Milan!
