We were really excited to try this place given reviews. Outside seating only. Great sounding menu. The staff was very helpful & friendly but the food was just ehhh. It was well plated. But just not very flavorful & not super fresh tasting as you would expect from a food truck. Rice was good. The salsa was the best part. Bummed it wasn’t better.

Stopped at Echate Mexican roadside stand on Main Street in Quartzsite yesterday, and it absolutely hit the spot. I tried three tacos—birria, carnitas, and fish—and every one of them tasted fresh and were made to order. The homemade chips and mild salsas (red=Guajillo and green= tomatillo) were perfect, and their hibiscus drink was clean, bright, and delicious.

The two owners, both originally from LA, were warm and welcoming. The outdoor eating area felt authentically Mexican, and I even snapped a picture with their burro décor.

Fresh ingredients, great hospitality, and food worth the wait. I’ll definitely be back.

I stopped by after a recommendation from a guy at the laundromat down the street and I am so glad I did. The food & service was excellent! I’ve been back three times and brought a friend and recommended Echate to my neighbors here in La Posa South LTVA. I love Mexican food and this restaurant has the best I’ve ever tasted. David & Estaban are the best!

Food: hard to rate something you can’t get
Customer Service: 2 stars
Overall cleanliness: It’s an outside place in a dusty town. It was as clean as it could be. 4 stars.

I had been to Echate previously, but only had birria tacos. I wanted to try a few other things before reviewing. We arrived at 11:55. We waited 10 minutes to place our order.

I ordered the 3-taco combo plate with chicken tinga, carnitas, and birria; it comes with beans & rice. David asked if I wanted the queso with the birria, & I declined (too much dairy for me). He then said the rice was still going to be 15 minutes, & he didn’t know if it would be ready in time. I asked if the rice wasn’t ready in time, could I have double beans (yes).

They give you chips & salsa when you order. Knowing they take a while (it is all hand-crafted & made to order), I asked to purchase an additional order of chips & salsa to munch while we waited.

I asked for a Coke or Pepsi and was told all they had was diet Coke or Fanta. I passed.

My friend ordered chicken nachos with everything. I paid $33 (which included a couple extra bucks for a tip).

We sat down & started chatting. It’s been 15 minutes & we still haven’t had any chips & salsa.

I know you’re really busy with the food, but did I order extra chips? Do we still get chips with our order?”

Chips start coming out of the side window. I’m waiting for the salsa. Only green comes out. I asked about getting some red salsa & am told that they are out. I get given some pico de gallo instead. Disappointing, but at least I got the pico.

I notice that everyone else is taking the same amount of chips & salsa that I am. Soooo, I paid $4.99 for something that others are getting for free (I heard what they ordered & it wasn’t extra chips & salsa). I go to the window and ask for my money back for that. I’m told the “big chips & salsa come out with your food.” I didn’t want more chips with my meal; I wanted them to munch on while we waited. I’m given $5.

A plate of tacos comes out the window & is handed to me. No rice, no beans. I notice that the birria taco has the queso on it (so I can’t eat that one).

My friend is still waiting for their nachos.

It’s now 12:40, and I’ve just barely gotten my food & not even all of it, and my friend is still waiting.

I go ask about the beans and rice. I’m told that the rice isn’t ready yet. I scratch my head in confusion and say, “I thought you told me it would be 15 minutes…30+ minutes ago.”

David, “Yeah, well, I burnt the 1st batch because I was taking orders.”

At this point, I’m sure I rolled my eyes because there have been an abundance of chances for Echate to provide the quality food they offer, and they continue to fall short, time and time again.

“Forget it, I’ll just give you your money back.”

I’m given a $20 bill.

My friend is still waiting for food. They’ve gotten nothing yet.

David can see my friend looking up at the window with an obvious question on their face, “What? What do you need?”

The nachos he originally ordered.

We’re then told that when I asked for my money back for the extra chips & salsa I ordered, the nachos got cancelled.

I’m sorry, what? How does one equal the other? An extra order of chips & salsa versus a plate of fully loaded chicken nachos. Those are not the same at all.

I paid $33 & was given $25 back.

While I’m waiting on my food, several incorrect orders came out, they weren’t able to fulfill another guest’s order for cactus salad because it wasn’t cut up yet, and an older gentleman who ordered his tacos to go got them in a plastic basket meant for here. He said “screw it” and got into his truck, basket and all, and drove off.

The tiny bit of food that I did get and was able to eat was yummy.

David Bisbee, the partner who is currently managing while the other is dealing with family concerns out of town, has replied to my review on FB basically calling me a liar.

Chicken Tinga and Adovada burritos are fantastic. Chips are extra crispy, salsa are on point. Roadside diner with shared, outdoor seating. Will definitely return.

Authentic street tacos! Salsas have a lot of flavor without the heat. Beans and cilantro rice sides are perfect.

1hr to get my order right. Ordered street taco meal with cilantro rice and refried bean. Was given quesadilla first, forgot drinks and had to wait to get my order which came out without rice and beans! I think I’ll pass and go to fillbertos next time which is also cheaper! Very disappointing.
Edit, the food was OK but far from best street tacos I had. And 1 hour is far too long for street tacos. Yes I did get a free drink, however, everyone got free chips. When I asked where my sides were your employee said “OK I was only told tacos”. So it appears you have communication issues. Also the chicken quesadilla that was mistakenly given to me and I took to my car and opened, was immediately resold to another customer! Yes I saw that, and another reason to not return. I very seldom give this bad of a review, but it appears that you have I high opinion of your self and should try being more humble. Good luck and hope you improve but I will not return!

Cap. Slow 5.0
The food was great. It’s a very small place only 4 tables In an outside environment. What I’m trying to say is don’t expect the same comfort that you get from a large sit down restaurant. However I don’t think that comfort is necessary for street tacos. It was a 15 min wait for my quesabirria quesadilla and my friends 4 adovada tacos. I can difinitely see it taking longer if it was busy. The highlight of the restaurant is the food. Thet make birria and adovada which are 2 specialty foods that not everyone in the hispanic culture knows how to make. However they did a fantastic job. The taste of the birria was great and the side of consome sauce was spicy and flavorful (my friend couldn’t believe how fast ate everything). The presentation was also very good. My one true criticism would be that the black beans needed more salt, which wouldn’t have been an issue if they had salt shakes at the tables.

This is a place definitely worth stopping for!!! So delicious and fresh, the food and Agua fresca was so good! The lovely people that work/run the place are also so sweet. We had a person in our party that was vegan and they made the best tacos for her! If you’re passing through or live local, you should stop and enjoy.
