That’s the good, here’s the not-so-good. The service is slow, as they literally handle each customer order by order, instead of having each customer wait aside like basically every other coffee place does. Also, the old guy was kind of rude, and a bit of a Smart Alec. A lady was inquiring of what was in one of the smoothies, and he, in a rather impatient tone, replied “It’s what’s on the board.” I didn’t like that. The value for money for the food is also not the greatest, maybe even bad depending on what you get. I got the Santorini Grilled sandwich, which is basically just a prosciutto grilled cheese, but I thought it sounded good so I ordered. It wasn’t really that special, and for $16? Mm mm, that’s a rip off.
Verdict: Slow, and a bit rough around the edges, but they do have great coffee and a beautiful interior if you’re willing to put up with the negatives.
The younger staff has always been great, friendly, attentive, and they usually make the coffee for you and bring it to your table. This time, the older gentleman at the front took our order and seemed less than interested in providing good service. I ordered an iced coffee with creamer… Instead of preparing the overpriced coffee for you, there was an uncovered metal bowl of half-and-half sitting out for self service. Not exactly the warm, thoughtful service we’ve had before…
We also decided to try the avocado toast for the first time… and probably the last. It was barely toasted sliced bread with avocado that was cut like a child’s meal. No seasoning, no garnish, no creativity. At $12.50 (plus $3.50 to add an egg), it felt more like something you’d throw together at home than a menu-worthy dish, especially at that price point. One of the younger staff members did end up bringing some seasoning and sliced tomato to try to recover the sad $16 sliced toast.
Details matter, and that’s what keeps people coming back. This time it was a dud.
Breakfast was a hit. I got a full plate of eggs and beans. Goes well with my iced coffee. Iced drinks should have served in glass instead of plastic cup but whatever. It is a little bit more expensive than typical breakfast place.
Parking is a problem like everyone are saying. They have a separate parking lot by the roundabout.
We enjoyed the Huevos Racheros with corn tortillas. Staff was polite and informative.
Dining here is a multi-sensory experience: on a bright summer day the main patio along the canal is lustrous as a Renoir painting: full of vibrant flowers and plasticine succulents. Grab a seat at one of the umbrella-shaded tables and watch the masts of the boats bobbing in the marina next door. This is an ideal place to bring your summer beach read or a print edition of the Sunday Times and linger over a lap bowl of coffee and a hearty portion of oatmeal. Or try a power smoothie or one of their many interesting entrees.
Prices are a little steep for a coffee spot, and yes service – as a few gripers have pointed out in low-ball reviews – can be slow. But this is a summer bohemian hangout where, for a single Andy Jackson, you can enjoy a solid meal while immersing yourself in a magical setting. Think of it as breakfast crossed with a day retreat. Err, make that a half-day retreat since Cliffords shuts promptly at 1 pm. That’s about my only complaint about the place. Otherwise it’s radiant.
