The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, perfectly complementing the overall experience. I also had a pleasant conversation with the new owner and was impressed by their professionalism and genuine passion for the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would highly recommend this restaurant. ✨
If you’re looking for an exceptional sushi experience in Pickering, look no further than Sakura Sushi. This charming, family-run restaurant may be small in size, but it more than makes up for it with its warm, cozy atmosphere and outstanding food that keeps you coming back.
The Sushi & Sashimi Combo was nothing short of impressive — beautifully plated and presented with care, it was clear that this kitchen takes pride in every dish.
But the real standout surprise? The Fish Balls. An absolute must-try appetizer that pairs perfectly with a cold beer. Crispy, flavorful, and addictive — I couldn’t stop reaching for more. It’s the kind of dish that makes you wish every restaurant had it on their menu.
The family-run nature of this place really shines through in the hospitality — you feel genuinely welcomed from the moment you walk in.
Two thumbs up for Sakura Sushi!!
What I like:
1. fresh
2. variety – not just salmon
3. the taste – phenomenal – the only way you can get to this level is to eat sushi in Vancouver or Seoul or Tokyo.
4. price – bang for the dollar/high value-proposition
Concern:
I don’t want them to get too busy but this is just too good not to share with the other sushi lovers. And the management are wonderful people who deserve the business.
We ordered the large sushi boat both times; once at the restaurant and once for take out. Both times, it was a massive hit. And ever since the last time, I’ve been craving more.
They have an online ordering system which is convenient.
The daughter works the phones/tables and the father is the chef and mother the kitchen support. It’s a small family business and that makes me want them to be even more successful.
This place will blow up very soon. You just watch. I look my Portuguese friend and now she is going to drive all the way from Markham with her visiting sister from Portugal to let her experience this Master sushi chef’s talents.
Don’t hesitate, buy now. I fear WHEN they get popular the prices will go up. Get it now before that happens.
This place has my strongest recommendation!
Key Takeaways:
Exceptional Quality: The sushi and sashimi are fresh and meticulously prepared, making it a go-to for serious sushi enthusiasts in the Durham region.
Must-Try Dishes: Don’t miss the Spicy Salmon Roll, the signature Sakura Roll, or the highly recommended Kimchi Fried Rice.
Service Note: While the food and staff are fantastic, the dine-in experience sometimes includes an unusual counter-ordering and payment process.
Overall: Highly recommended if you prioritize superior freshness and quality over quantity.
The service is beyond friendly, and the sushi and sashimi are exceptionally fresh and beautifully presented, with clear attention to detail — each dish looks like a piece of art.
If you’re visiting Pickering, you have to try this place. 10/10 recommend
I normally go to Scarborough/Markham for sushi, but now I can find good quality here as well!!
Will definitely be back!
Hope to see some toro/ootoro fish in the menu too ❤️❤️❤️
Got the gyoza and the salmon lover’s dinner.
The gyoza were crispy and had lots of filling. The sashimi in the salmon lover’s dinner were huge and everything tasted great 🙂
The only actual real dishes were the melamine shaped dishes to hold the soy and wasabi. To be fair, there were signs that stated you have to bring your dishes to the back when finished but we did not imagine we would get a food court experience.
My udon soup was super bland and flavourless however the only saving grace were the chewy udon noodles; they weren’t overcooked. The beef in the soup was bland so I only ate one bite and gave the rest to my husband. The spicy maki rolls were just okay. However I did hear a loyal takeout customer say “I love your food!” To each his own—having recently come back from Tokyo, this was not the case for us sadly.
In all fairness, the staff are very friendly and respectful. A nice young man did bring the food to our tables but that was it.
We noticed there were many locals picking up takeout so we’re glad they can keep their business afloat with takeout but there is much room for improvement for the dine in experience. Please readjust your dine in practices to post COVID times by tweaking the flavour and serving size portions of your entrees. We wish your business well.
