This little Japanese bakery has lots of unique savory and sweet pastries and bread. We tried the Aji Tama Egg donuts, Wagyu Curry Bread Bread, Corn Mayo, Strawberry cheesecake Danish, Chocolate strawberry croissant, etc. We love it all. The staff are friendly and polite. But this bakery is a small counter in a corner inside Mitsuwa, so when there are a handful of customers around, you have to be patient and wait. The price is very affordable but the bread is smaller and slightly more pricey than 85c. But, the variety and quality is definitely worth every penny. This bakery also sells coffee as well in case you want some caffeine to wash down these delicious pastries with. Parking can be very challenging during peak hours.

Hamada-ya is conveniently located in the Mitsuwa market (by the cashier entrance). It’s a Japanese bakery that sells bread, sweet and savory pastries, salad, sandwiches, and drinks.

We opted for a coffee jelly milk, and an iced coffee w/ almond milk & tiramisu syrup. We also got a apple custard cake to share. I enjoyed the coffee jelly milk the most, and the apple custard cake was airy and fluffy. However, I wish the coffee was stronger. Also, I probably wouldn’t recommend their tiramisu coffee, it tasted pretty artificial IMO.

All in all, it’s a nice little Japanese bakery. The pastries were slightly on the expensive side, but the quality was there. Drinks were relatively cheap. Will probably be back to try out the Boloniya bread and other savory pastries when I’m in the area.

I’ve been coming to Mitsuwa for a while, but I never stopped to check out Hamada-Ya until today. They offer a large variety of Japanese pastries, rolls, breads, and more.

I decided to treat myself to a melon pan + a loaf of shokupan, and I was NOT disappointed at all. This was my first time having melon pan (I missed out when I was in Japan) and it absolutely blew my mind!! The bread was soooo soft + fresh, and the outer cookie-like shell had a great flavor + texture—I pretty much inhaled it in 2 minutes. It changed my life, which may sound dramatic, but I take my carbs very seriously.

I can’t wait to come back for more melon pan and also try all of the other baked goodies they offer!

I absolutely love the pastries at this location! My two favorites are the strawberry croissant and the delectable crème fruit tart.
I highly recommend trying both of these treats at this amazing bakery!

Located in the mitsuwa supermarket. The bakery had very friendly staff and while small had a solid selection of sweet and savory options and breads. The curry donut was the best I’ve had outside of Japan! I will definitely be stopping by again.

I went today to get cheese cake slices, and they missed giving me one of the cheesecake slices I bought.

Very disappointed, as the person at the register rang up the items first, then grabbed the items while I was paying. Wish they would have waited so could make sure tgat they got all the items I asked for

I ordered online using Clover, and they had my box ready for some time. The box was cool to the touch, so they prepared it with care. The lady that handed it to me was nice. There’s a tip jar but I didn’t use cash.

The goods I got were great. 5 treats. Two for mum, two for me, one for a friend. Cut off a piece of a green tea whatchamacalit, it was delicious.

One curry pan for dinner. Happy with that.

If I’m ever in the area again, this bakery is always going to be a mandatory stop.

I reheated the curry pan when I got home. Accidentally charred the top. It didn’t matter. Doesn’t taste burnt at all. Curry pan is amazing. So durable.

Inside Mitsuwa Marketplace, Costa Mesa.
Rum raisin danish and creme fruit tart, because everyone should have a treat once in a while.

I submitted a last minute inquiry on the Hamada-Ya website to order a whole strawberry shortcake, and Scott kindly gave me a call the very next morning. The ordering and pick-up process was very smooth and Scott was extremely helpful and responsive. Unfortunately the bakery wasn’t able to add any personalized message but it looked beautiful with some candles! The cake was moist and the strawberries were very fresh. Hope to visit again!

I love the food here but SERVICE IS AWFUL. I always buy from them everytime I go to mitsuwa but sadly they are very stingy with plastic bags and boxes. I always end up getting squished bread. Today, they put everything again in 1 bag so I asked if they can separate one of the breads then the japanese lady at the storefront is straight up rude telling me “it is not okay” to ask for extra bags in an arrogant voice.– I ended up returning her precious bag. You should work on your service especially the people at the store front. Sadly, I would not want to go back here again.
